    Stop, you two, and see a state beyond description.

    And rise, you two: behold the morning sun eclipsed.

    And, as a kindness, pour forth floods of tears with me,

    though the eye's tears bring sorrow and do not heal.

    بَلى إِن أَعِش من غير لَهفٍ فَيا لَهفي

    And do not wonder, you two, that I die of anguish;

    nay, if I live without anguish, what anguish would be mine!

    Indeed, to God we return; and sufficient for us—

    and an excellent Guardian—is God, Lord of bounty and kindness.

    I wept for those qualities, carried away

    by heavy earth after comfort and tenderness.

    I wept for forbearance, knowledge, and chastity,

    that, with the dignity of guidance, accompanied a fluttering glance.

    I wept for the branch whose root was torn out,

    and from its blossoms I had gathered no fruit for plucking.

    I wept for the gold dinar of a face I possessed,

    then parting forestalled me by exchanging it away.

    ولكنّه ما زال في القَلب وَالطرفِ

    I wept for the full moon borne far away,

    yet it remains in my heart and eyes;

    وَما الشَمسُ تأوي لِلتُراب من العُرفِ

    and for a sun hidden behind a veil of earth—

    it is not the sun's custom to take shelter in dust;

    إِلى صدف من تُربِها طيّبِ العَرفِ

    and for a jewel, peerless, that was returned

    to a sweet-scented shell of her own earth;

    and for a tame gazelle frightened away, her gaze turning back

    toward the young she left behind at parting:

    two little ones who tasted the shock of orphanhood after her,

    a state that needs no explanation.

    I was told, “Be patient.” I said, “Impossible! She

    has assailed me with an army of my sorrows drawn up in ranks.”

    فَيا ليت أَنّي قَد فررت من الزحفِ

    I stood firm, having faced the war of parting from her;

    oh, would that I had fled the onslaught!

    She said, as departure's hour arrived, having seen

    the summons to parting that no hand can fend off:

    “My Lord's command has come; welcome His decree.”

    So glory to Him who shelters her in a cave of eternity!

    So where is my endurance after her? I have lost it,

    just as my heart has departed, with none to replace it.

    فَهَل من سَبيل لِلقُفول ومن عطفِ

    O lady of the caravan, I have witnessed the departure;

    is there any way to return, any turning back?

    You dwell in gardens of bliss, while my soul

    is on a fire of separation from you, with none to quench it.

    You departed, leaving the dwellings and their people

    in neglect, their condition changed for the worse.

    فَأقسمت ما لي بَعدَ بُعدِك مِن إِلفِ

    I lost in you my family, in kinship and affection;

    so I swore: after your departure, I have no companion.

    And I returned to sleeplessness, regret, and sorrow,

    and, when you departed, sleep divorced my eyes.

    It was my heart, not my robe, that I tore over you,

    and I cried, “O generations of my forbearance, be gone!”

    And as for my groaning, bewilderment, and weeping—

    my eye shields you; some of what has passed is enough.

    The bewilderment of one abandoned, and the groan of one alone,

    and the abasement of one crushed, and the loneliness of one in hiding.

    I am a stranger, even if I dwell in my own town,

    and I am alone, even if I lean upon a companion.

    Peace, divine favor, repose, and mercy

    be upon you from the All-Merciful, Lord of bounty and compassion.

    So my heart has been in loss since the day of parting,

    until I see your form in my row at the Resurrection.

    After my life is gone, can I hope for ease in living on?

    Alas for my weariness if my death is slow to reach me!

    My God, come to my aid with kindness, for I—

    if You do not rescue me, O Mighty One—am truly weak.

    My God, You suffice me; have mercy on my abasement,

    for in what has befallen me, I seek sufficiency in You.

    And send blessings upon the best of creation and his family,

    and his companions, as long as one far away longs for a dear companion.
