When will Egypt's horizon shine with my moons,

And I recount tales of Bashshar about reunion,

And read union's verses from the pages of faces,

Where the seals of kisses resemble tenth-verse markers,

And sway like one drunk with the joy of reunion,

Owing no thanks to a wine-seller's cups?

To Egypt! Oh, my longing for Egypt and her people,

The yearning of a lover who did not choose separation!

O Egypt, how desolate I am away from you, a land

Whose entrants receive glad tidings of safety from the Creator!

Gentle northern breezes blow across her land,

And from them the nose inhales the scent of a perfumer's casket.

Much envied, she gives no faultfinder grounds for censure,

Though excellence's fire-stick sparks among her people.

When they rival her in glory, her Nile's sharp blade rises

With a true measure, shattering every boaster.

The pastures of my delights and the playground of my youth,

The beginning of my homelands and the goal of my desires,

The dwelling of my beloveds and the pleasure-ground of my eye,

The rising-place of my moons and the setting-place of my thoughts.

There I donned revelry's robes in abandon,

And my excuses justified my casting off my bridle.

How many a gazelle of mine there, like the sun,

Possessed my soul with a turn and an unveiling!

And many a moon whose face's light brings the full moon

Darkness and effacement after fullness and radiance!

His fragrance betrays us when he sways,

Mocking boughs and putting flowers to shame.

O our beloveds, I was scorched at sea after you,

By my own fire, while you were amid gardens and rivers.

Separation cast me away until I mounted a steed

The tales of which hold wonders for evening storytelling.

When smooth terrain appears, she slows in her journey,

Yet speeds through waves, traveling over rough ground.

A running ship, yet she enslaves anyone

Who enters her belly, slave and free alike.

Though saddled in her belly, she walks swiftly

On her back—so hear my wondrous accounts!

No good is in her save that her passenger

Is a companion of the Qur'an, constant in invocations.

The strangest thing I tell is that I am a traveler

Who stays in place, though my dwelling is forever on the move.

On my journey I found no companion

Except books; with their volumes I dispel care.

I spend the night in converse with the horizon, imagining you

Its stars, until I have fallen in love with my nightly companions.

I parted from the beloved's breaths and lips,

And darkness grew long with the loss of my morning and my dawns.

    فَمُذ نَفِدَت طُرّاً بكاكُم بأَنوارِ

    My eye wept tears, blood, and sleep;

When all were spent, it wept its light for you.

How dark the world is to my eye, now that far away have gone

The reproaching masters of my passion, and my moons.

I donned the robes of night in sorrow for reunion,

And became an unmatched dragger of tears' trailing hem.

    فَحذفُكمُ عَن مُقلَتي حَذفُ إِضمارِ

    Nothing but you is in my inner thoughts since I lost you;

So your omission from my eye is an ellipsis that leaves you implicit.

You are my soul's wishes and my insight's guidance,

The illumination of my eyes and the easing of my hardship.

You lodged in my heart, the builder of your love,

And set the house of hospitality ablaze.

So in parting do not seek its death, for among

The signs of rebels is the killing of Ammar.

I think separation is no disgrace, because I

Have known you never to turn a blind eye to disgrace.

O breezes of the wind, by God, convey

My greetings to my soul, dwelling in my home.

Ask her to indulge my eye in its sleep,

That it may enjoy sweet union with her night-wandering phantom.

Do not tell her of my sickness—it would distress her—

Nor of my lingering sleeplessness, nor my flowing tears.

And tell her that to the pledge of her love

I remain true, though my travels' distance is not yet traversed.

I departed without a heart, without companionship, without

Sweet sleep; she is my solace and remembrance.

I remember a house that held her sweet fragrance,

And in poems find comfort in sweet bay and laurel.

And who is content with traces once the beloved himself is gone?

Who, then, will bring me traces of my heart's beloved?

If she whose beauty enthralled my heart has become

An emigrant, my tears have become my helpers.

It is sorrow enough to have no helper but weeping

To lighten my sorrows and conceal my secrets.

Lovers shed tears only to ward off

Sorrow's hand from hearts with eyes, in ignorance.

I conceal my passion from reproacher and envier,

For my outward patience is unlike what I keep hidden.

    فَيا لَهفي بَعدَ الرَحيل عَلى الدارِ

    I am afflicted with one who does not know the depth of my infatuation;

Ah, my yearning for the house after departure!

I smile, but if my inner self were revealed to you,

You would discover within it a fire with a whirlwind.

Many a friend's breast has constricted at parting,

And not everyone who meets separation is steadfastly patient.

He says, 'Shall I conceal my reproach or voice it?

And how fares patience's fire-stick?' I said to him, 'It sparks.'

The summons of separation deceived me; here I am:

I came to the water, not knowing the outcome of my departure.

An ally of sorrows, with tears unrestrained,

A companion of griefs, a captive of my thoughts.

I spent my life seeking to reach reunion,

Yet gained not a tenth of a tenth of what I hoped for,

Except that my care is fixed within my heart,

And my stipend of tears, since they left, is released and flowing.
