جزى الله بالحسنى ليالي أحسنت
May God reward with goodness the nights you were kind
تداويت لا من علة خوف علة
I took medicine, not for a malady, fearing one,
توخ فعال الخير واجتنب الأذى
Do good deeds and avoid harm
لامني في اختصار كتبي حبيب
I have no beloved in my abridged books
عفا الله عما جره اللهو والصبا
May God forgive what playfulness and youth led him to do,
أيا ساكني قلبي على بعد دارهم
O dweller of my heart though you are far away
بحمد الله وافتنا التهاني
With God's praise we offer congratulations
أيها الماجد المحافظ ما أغفلت
O glorious protector, never have you neglected
بما حوت الأجفان نفدي عصابة
With what the eyelids contained we ransom a band
إن اللئيم على حقارة قدره
The base fellow in his lowly state
مات معز الدين من قبل أن
Before Mu'izz ad-Din could delight
عاقني عن هناء مولاي بالعيد
My Lord has kept me from joy on Eid
يا طالب الرزق بالتقويم تصنعه
O seeker of livelihood through astrology you fabricate
بالله أحلف أيمانا مغلظة
I swear a solemn oath by God,
لساني وطرفي في هواك تخالفا
My tongue and my gaze are at odds in their love for you
كتابك درياق الفؤاد من الأسى
Your book is a shield for the heart from sorrow
أرى المرء يهوى أن تطول حياته
I see a man desiring his life to lengthen
صحبنا الدهر أياماً حساناً
Our companion time granted us days of joy
ليس في التقويم مايرغب
The calendar has nothing
إني كتبت إلى الحبيب رسالة
I wrote to my beloved a letter
يهذي المنجم في أحكامه أبداً
The astrologer raves in his judgments forever
تركت قيامي للصديق يزورني
I gave up standing to greet a friend
هذه مبتدا الرسائل
This is the beginning of poems
هل أنت راحم عبرة توله
Are you a compassionate consoler of the distraught,
رعى الله عيشاً نعمنا به
May Allah bless a life we enjoy,
نهاري في عمر النوى كله جنح
My days in the span of time are all wings
لا يضجرنكم كتبي إذا كثرت
My frequent writings should not bore you,
العبد يهدي إلى المولى ويتحفه
The servant offers to his Master and gifts Him
يا سيف دين الله عش سالماً
O sword of Allah's religion, live in peace
وكم في الأرض من حسن ولكن
Though the earth holds such beauty, still
حلفت بسجان اللواحظ فاتن
I swore by the keeper of the alluring glances
قدمت فلم أترك لذي قدم حكما
I presented myself and left no room for another with a past to judge
عمارة في الإسلام أبدى خيانة
Umara in Islam betrayed forever
دع المنجم يكبو في الضلال
Let the astrologer wander lost in ignorance,
أيا من أرجيه وآمل عفوه
O you whom I hope for and await your pardon
روض الهوى مرتع وخيم
The meadow of love is a shaded pasture
فدى لك مجد الدين نفسي التي بها
I ransom you with every glory of religion my soul, with which
رأيتك سعد الدين أكرم منتم
I saw you, Sa'd al-Din, honored and respected
سقى الله بغداداً وساكنها الحيا
God watered Baghdad and its inhabitants with life
زمان الصبا واللهو حييت بائناً
The days of my youth and playfulness have passed away
وناجم في علم تقويمه
An astrologer skilled in his science's principles,
بكل صباح لي وكل عشية
يا جمال الدنيا ولولاك كانت
إذا ضاق عذر المرء في جنب ذنبه
عاقني عن لقاء مولاي أمر
بنفسي من أغلقت كفي بحبله
يا خير من يعشو إليه امرؤ
لبست من الأعمار تسعين حجة
ذريني وخلقي يا أميم فإنني
وصل الكتاب المهتدى برشاده
نزه فؤادك عن وجد وعن وجل
وافت رسائل هذا الفتح مقبلة
لك الله نور الدين ردء وحافظ
عقني الصبر منذ أقوى العقيق
دع المنجم يكبو في ضلالته
إن نور الدين لما أن رأى
وصال الغواني كان أورى وأرجا
إني علقت بمحيي الدين معتضدا
