1. I saw you, Sa'd al-Din, honored and respected
As a carpenter, and his sons glorified

2. You proved, if one spoke fairly, perplexing
In every grand affair and knotty problem

3. Will you destroy what you built in some repentance
To alleviate from yourself a heavy guilt?

4. I had hoped you would complete it
Perfectly, bringing ample reward

5. So beware the deceitful world, its joys
Are on loan to every fool, unforgotten

6. Be not fooled by hasty comfort
Distracting you from lasting truth

7. Know the nights' joys are fleeting
And bitterest what is not made lawful

8. In advising you, I am like a bankrupt man
Lecturing the wealthy on thrift

9. Neglecting his own affairs
Lost in fruitless meddling

10. He found himself fit to guide others
Yet has no qualification to guide himself
