- أبلغ أمير المؤمنين رسالةConvey a message to the Commander of the Faithful,
- إذا ما تريني اليوم مزجى ظعينتيIf you see me today urging my litter-bearing camel onward,
- أراك إذا أجرت على أميرI see you: when you grant my emir protection against me,
- أرب من تغتشه لك ناصحMany a person you suspect of deceit is a sincere adviser to you;
- اشرب شرابك وانعم غير محسودDrink your wine and enjoy, envied by none
- اصبر يزيد فقد فارقت ذا ثقةBe patient, Yazid, for you have parted from a trustworthy man.
- أضحت سليمى بعد طول عتابAfter prolonged estrangement and the passing of youth's vigor,
- أطفأ عني نار كلبين ألباHe quenched for me the fire of two curs who had set
- أفاطم قد طال التدل والمطلO Fatima, coyness and delay have lasted long.
- أفي جرجرايا أنت كفنا بن فرزنٍAre you in Jarjarāyā, Kafnā ibn Farzan,
- أقتيب قد قلنا غداة أتيتناO Qutayb, we did say on the morning you came to us:
- أقلي علي اللوم يابنة مالكLessen your blame of me, daughter of Malik,
- ألا أبلغ أبا حسن علياListen: tell Abu Hasan, Ali,
- آلا انتسأت بالود عنك وأدبرتAh, she has withdrawn her love from you and turned away,
- ألا رب ذي نصح وقد تستغشهBehold, many a sincere adviser you may nevertheless suspect of deceit;
- الله أعطاك التي لا فوقهاGod has given you that which nothing surpasses.
- ألؤم بن لؤم ما عدا بك حاسراO vile one, son of a vile one, what drove you, unarmored,

- أنت امرؤ إما ائتمنتك خالياYou are a man: either I trusted you in private,
- إني أَرى فتنة تغلي مراجلهاIndeed, I see strife whose cauldrons boil.
- أين تضرب بنا لعداة تجدناWherever you lead us against foes, you will find us
- ترنمت يابن الحر وحدك خالياYou sang, O son of al-Hurr, alone and secluded,
- تعزوا يابني حرب بصبرConsole yourselves, O sons of Harb, with patience.
- جعلت الغواني من بالكاYou have made the fair women your concern,
- خيب الله سعي أوفى بن حصنMay God thwart the striving of Awfa ibn Hisn,
- دعا ابن مطيع للبياع فجئتهIbn Mutiʿ called for allegiance, so I came to him,
- رأت غلاما علا شرب الطلاء بهShe saw a youth whom drinking boiled wine had lifted high,
- رأيتك تقصي من يودك قلبهI saw you push away one whose heart loves you,
- رب من أغتشه ينصحنيMany a person I mistrust counsels me sincerely,
- سأنصح قيسا قيس عيلان إننيI shall counsel Qays—the Qays of ʿAylān—for indeed I
- عمدت بمدحتي عثمان إنيI have set my praise upon ʿUthmān, for I—
- عمر الخير يا شبيه أبيهUmar the good, O likeness of his father,
- فأخلف وأتلف إِنما المال عارةSo replenish and spend—wealth is only a loan;
- قومي أصحيني فما صيغ الفتى حجراRise, rouse me, for a young man was not fashioned of stone,
- كحية الماء لا تنحاش عن أحدLike a water snake that recoils from no one,
- لعمرك ما المعروف غير أهلهBy your life, kindness to the undeserving
- لعمرو أبي تمدر ما بنوهاBy the life of Tamaddur’s father, her sons are not
- لقد ضاعت رعيتكم لديكمYour subjects have indeed been neglected in your care.
- لما تمكن دنياهم أطاعهمWhen their worldly fortunes became secure, he obeyed them;
- ما زلت أرجو أبا حفص وسيرتهI kept placing my hopes in Abu Hafs and his conduct,
- متى ما أقل يوما لصاحب حاجةWhenever, one day, I say to someone in need,
- نعم حاجة كلفتها القيظ كلهYes, a request I was charged with all through summer’s heat.
- وقد جرب الناس آل الزبيرAnd indeed the people have tested the house of al-Zubay—
- ولا يكونن مال الله مأكلةAnd let God's wealth never become a feast
- يا ابن الزبير أمير المؤمنين ألمO Ibn al-Zubayr, Commander of the Faithful, has not
- يا دار ليلى بأبلي فذي حسمO Layla's dwelling at Ublayy and Dhu Husam,
- يا ليتني حين يممت القلوص لهOh, would that, when I steered the young she-camel toward him,
