O Ibn al-Zubayr, Commander of the Faithful, has not
O son of Zubayr, commander of the faithful, have you not
Word reached you of what the officials have done in office?
Been informed of what the workers did to their work?
باعواthey sold to التجارthe merchants طعامthe grain of الأرضthe land واقتسمواand they divided
صلبthe substance of الخَراجthe land tax شِحاحاًgreedily قسمةَlike the division of النَّفلspoils
They sold the merchants the land's grain and divided
The merchants sold the food of the land and divided up
The substance of the land tax, greedily, as though dividing spoils.
The essence of the taxes stingily, like apportioning surplus.
وقدَّمواand they sent forward لكto you شيخاًan old man كاذباًlying خذلاًfeeble
مهماwhatever يقلhe says لكto you شيخan old man كاذبlying يقلhe will say
And they sent you a lying, feeble old man;
And they presented to you a lying old man, a traitor.
Whatever a lying old man might say to you, he will say.
No matter what a lying old man tells you, he lies.

And in you is a seeker of justice, firm of resolve,
And you have a seeker of rights, steadfast,
Stout in strength, neither slack nor dependent on others.
Tough, not to be bent or appeased.

Take a firm hold of Zayd, if you catch him,
Strengthen your hand through Zayd if you gain power over him,
And relieve the widows of the dung beetle's ball.
And heal the widows from the oppression of taxes.

We have been afflicted with a spiny-tailed lizard of Banu Khalaf,
We are troubled by the arrogance of the clan of Khalif;
Who regards treachery as drinking water with honey.
They see treachery as sweet as drinking water with honey.

Seize al-Usayfir, the little sparrow, and pluck his fledgling's feathers,
Take Al-‘Usayfir and pluck the feathers of his uprising,
Until he staggers under misery after his youthful prime.
Until the evil melts away after being kindled.

Nor is Attab's trustworthiness so sound
And the trust of ‘Attab is not secure,
That it has no flaw; rather, it is full of byways.
No hints about it, but the roads are confused.

And Qays of Kinda's governorship has lasted long,
And Qays Kindah, his rule has lasted long
At the land's navel, between plain and mountain.
In the land, between the plains and mountains.

And seize Hujayr, then subject him to an accounting;
And take Hujayr and follow him with reckoning,
Even if you excuse others, do not excuse Banu Qufal.
And if you pardon him, do not pardon the clan of Qufal.

Nothing about them aroused my suspicion except their rise
I do not doubt them except for their haughtiness
To khabis sweetmeats, away from fish relish and onions.
And disdain for flatbread and onions.

Nor is a youth overseeing land at Salimah
No boy owns land as safely
Like one who campaigned in Dastaba without taking a fee.
As one who conquered the desert not girded for war,

The land tax is gathered for him as he reclines,
Collecting land taxes while lounging
Scoffing in the courtyard of the lightly clad singing girl.
Mocking the loss of the close-cropped hair of monks.

And al-Walibi, whom Mihran appointed—
And al-Waleeby whom Mihran made prince
Mihran departed disgraced, but he remained.
So Mihran is blamed and always will be.

And take Ibn Abi Ashsh and his companion,
And you have the son of Abi ‘Ish and his companion
Qayl al-Sabi': he has run his course at leisure.
It is said al-Saba’ so he went his way slowly.

And Munqidh ibn Tarif, of Banu Asad—
And Manqudh ibn Tareef of Bani Asad
I was told their official has gone off with a heavy load.
I have heard his agent has gone heavily laden.

Nor is Ukhaynis of Ju'fi kept back
And what prevents Al-Khaynis Ja’fi
From possessions by night prayer with the long surahs.
From goods is staying up late in the dark.

And ad-Darimi circles the Bahraman around him
On a moustache, exchanged for tending camels.
In a drink changed into pasturing camels.

And two other officials have in their possession
And two other agents with them
Some obtainable wealth; handle it gently, and you will get it:
Some gain if you deal gently with it you will attain.

Muhammad ibn Umayr, and the man let down
Muhammad ibn ‘Umayr whom Bakr
By Bakr on the morning of terror and alarm.
Wronged one morning in fright and panic.

Nor is Furat, though called a pious man,
And it is said Frat is pious but
If he gains anything, so fearful and anxious.
If he gained something through that fearful trembling man.

And al-Harithy will be content if you share with him
If you overlook his earlier deeds.
If you overlook his first misdeeds.

And summon the Qara’ and refute them with logic
And load Mas'ud's treachery upon a camel.
And blame the treachery of Mas’ud on a camel.

They had come to us as men without riding camels;
They used to come to us as men without mounts
Today they have become owners of horses and camels.
Yet today they are the people of horses and camels.

They will not make amends to you until their heads suffer
They will not blame you, nor will their resolution falter
The whips' blows, followed by binding in fetters.
From the striking of whips and further tightening of fetters.

Indeed, when the whips bite their withers,
When the whips bite their legs
They reveal hoards of wealth and robes.
They reveal hidden treasures of wealth and fine clothes.
