ماnot زلتُI ceased أرجوI hope for أباAbu (father of) حَفصٍHafs وسيرتَهand his conduct
حتَّىuntil نكحتَyou married بأرزاقِwith the provisions of المَسَاكينِthe poor
I kept placing my hopes in Abu Hafs and his conduct,
Until you married using the poor’s provisions.
أنكحتمُyou gave in marriage ياO بنيsons of نَصرٍNasr فتاتَكُمُyour maiden
وَجهاًa face يَشينُmars وجوهَthe faces of الرَّبربِthe herd of wild cattle العِينِwide-eyed
You, sons of Nasr, have given your maiden in marriage
To a face that mars the faces of the wide-eyed herd of wild cattle.
أنحكتُمyou gave in marriage لاnot فتىa young man of دنياworldly life يُعاشُone is sustained بهِthrough him
ولاnor شجاعاًa brave man إذاwhen شُقَّتis split عصاthe staff of الدينreligion
You married her neither to a man of means who could sustain others,
Nor to a brave man when the staff of religion is split.
يابنO son of الزَّبَيرal-Zubayr لقدindeed وَلَّيتهyou appointed him شَبقاًlustful
كَزَّtight-fisted اليدينin both hands بخيلاًmiserly غيرَnot عِنَّينimpotent
O son of al-Zubayr, you have indeed appointed him—a lustful man,
Tight-fisted, miserly, and anything but impotent.
لاnot يَستطِفcomes within reach لهfor him مالٌwealth فيتركَهand he leaves it
ولاnor يقولُhe says لماof what يُعطاهُhe is given it يكفينيit suffices me
No wealth comes within his reach that he will leave untouched,
Nor does he say of what he is given, “It is enough for me.”
