By your life, kindness to the undeserving

and to the deserving is only like deposits held in trust:

One keeper lost what had been in his keeping,

while what another holds is not lost.

And people, in their gratitude for favors among them

and their ingratitude for them, are only like certain fields:

One field was fertile, so its crop doubled,

while another yielded nothing to any sower.

I reproach my people, yet show them mercy,

and do not sever ties with them when I reproach.

And I forgive whoever among my people makes a slip,

if he commits it under compulsion, not willingly.
