I shall counsel Qays—the Qays of ʿAylān—for indeed I
I shall counsel Qays—Qays ʿAylān; indeed, I am
am well qualified to counsel you, by virtue of kinship and common descent.
worthy to counsel the clan and its ancestral stock.

زياداًZiyad بلاwithout ذنبٍan offense مراجلهhis cauldrons تغليboil
And how could I withhold counsel from them, when I see
And how could I withhold counsel from them, when I see
Ziyād’s cauldrons boiling, though no offense has been done?
Ziyad, his cauldrons boiling though no offense has been committed?

So do not feel safe from him; take the middle course and you will be safe.

And desist from reproach; you will escape folly.

إلىto غيرهanything other than it فالحقّfor truth منamong أوضحthe clearest السّبلpaths
Hold fast to bitter truth; do not pass beyond it
Hold to bitter truth; do not go beyond it
to anything else—for truth is among the clearest paths.

ولاand do not تشتمواrevile أسلافكمyour forebears وتعاطفواand show mutual kindness

Do not revile your forebears; show compassion to one another
And do not revile your forebears; show one another kindness
in doing right—for righteousness is among the noblest deeds.
in goodness, for goodness is among the finest deeds.

And beware of reviling your rulers,
And beware of insulting your rulers,
lest calamity leave you poised upon the rope’s precarious edge.
lest calamity leave you caught in the rope's loop.
فغِنَّfor indeed (apparent typo) زياداًZiyad لاno عزيزmighty person بأرضهin his land
سواهexcept him وقدand indeed أعطاكمhe has given you النَّصفfair treatment فيwith مَهلforbearance
For as for Ziyād, there is no man of power in his land
For Ziyad—no one is mighty in his land
besides him; and he has dealt fairly with you and given you time.
except him; and he has given you fair treatment with forbearance.

So do not drive him to shed your blood,
So do not drive him to spill your blood,
for Ziyād is neither a coward nor a contemptible weakling.
for Ziyad is neither timid nor an interloper.
