- بها الصون إلا شوطها من غداتهاShe is kept safe, save for her early-morning gallop,
- ترى المرء يخشى بعض ما لا يضيرهYou see a man fear some things that do not harm him,
- تسائلني هوازن أين ماليHawāzin asks me, “Where is my wealth?
- تشكو إذا ما مشت بالدعص أخمصهاShe complains of her foot’s arch whenever she walks on the sand mound,
- تكاشرني كرها كأنك ناصحYou grin at me unwillingly, as though you were a well-wisher,
- جزى الله عني عنبسا كل صالحMay God reward Anbas on my behalf with every good,
- ذوو الأحساب أكرم مخبراتThose of noble lineage are nobler in character,
- رأيت أبا أمية وهو يلقىI saw Abu Umayya as he met
- رأيت سخي النفس يأتيه رزقهI saw the generous-hearted man's sustenance come to him
- علام جدت فلما خفت موحيةWhy were you generous, only, when you feared a ruinous calamity,
- فحقا أيقني لا صبر عنديSo know for certain: I have no patience
- فني الشباب وكل شيء فانيYouth has passed away, and all things pass away.
- لا يفرحن الشامتون فإنماLet those who gloat not rejoice, for they only
- من كان ذا عضد يدرك ضلامتهWhoever has a supporting arm wins redress for the wrong done him.
- من يك سائلا عني فإنيIf anyone asks about me, then indeed,
- هم البحور وتلقى من سواءهمThey are the seas, and you find those besides them,
- هم الرجال العلا أخذا بذروتهاMen's ambition is glory, grasping its summit;
- ودعاك دعوة مرهق فأجبتهAnd he called to you with a hard-pressed man's plea, and you answered him—
- ولا تصفين بالود من ليس أهلهAnd do not bestow sincere affection on one unworthy of it.
- وما خير من لا ينفع الأهل مالهWhat good is a man whose wealth brings his family no benefit?
- وما فضل من كانت سريعا عداتهAnd what merit has one who is quick to promise,
- ومسترق القصائد والمضاهيAnd the thief of poems and the imitator
- ومن يتخمط بالمظالم قومهAnd whoever tyrannizes over his people with injustice,
- ومولى كذئب السوء لو يستطيعنيAnd a kinsman, like an evil wolf—if he could overpower me,
- وورثت جدي مجده وفعالهAnd I inherited my grandfather's glory and deeds,
