هَمُّambition الرِجالِof men العُلاglory أَخذاًtaking hold بِذِروَتِهاof its summit
هَمُّ الرِجالِ العُلا أَخذاً بِذِروَتِها
وَإِنَّماand only هَمُّconcern يَعلىYaʿlā's الطولُlength وَالقِصَرُand shortness
وَإِنَّما هَمُّ يَعلى الطولُ وَالقِصَرُ
Men's ambition is glory, grasping its summit;
The ambition of men is to reach the heights
Yet Yaʿlā's only concern is length and shortness.
Yet my ambition is for length and brevity
