- أرى الدهر بالتفريق والبين مولعاI see Time enamored of division and separation,
- أصبحت مالي من عز ألوذبهI have come to have no protecting might in which to seek refuge,
- أقول لصاحبي والعيس تهوىI say to my companion, as the pale camels hasten
- ألا أيها الصمد الذي كنت مرةAh, O rocky height, where I once
- ألا تسألان الله أن يسقي الحمىWill you two not ask God to water al-Hima?
- ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلة بسعدAh, if only I knew: shall I ever spend a night
- ألا من لعين لا ترى قلل الحمىAh, who can help an eye that never sees al-Hima's peaks
- ألا من لقلب قد أصيبت مقاتلهAh, who is there for a heart whose vital parts have been struck?
- ألا من لنفس مستخف جليدهاAh, who will aid a soul whose fortitude is shaken,
- ألا يا جراد الغور هل أنت مبلغHark, locust of the Ghawr—will you carry from me
- إلى الله أشكو نية يوم قرقريTo God I lament the departure on the day of Qarqara,
- أنت المخاطب أيها الإنسانYou are the one addressed, O human being.
- تعز بصبر لاوجدك لا ترىConsole yourself with patience—no, by your grandsire, you will not see
- تواهس أصحابي حديثا لقيتهMy companions whispered to one another of news I had received,
- حلفت بدار الصير ما كفه الغضىAt Dar al-Sir I swore: neither Kaffat al-Ghada
- خليلي إن قابلتما الهضب أوبداMy two friends, if you come upon al-Hadb, or there appears
- خليلي إني واقف فمسلمMy two friends, I am stopping and offering greetings

- كداء الشجا بين الوريدين كلماLike the pain of a choking obstruction between the two jugular veins, whenever

- لعمرك ما ريا بذات أمانةBy your life, Rayyā is no woman to be trusted,
- لعمري لئن كنتم على النأي والقلىBy my life, if, despite distance and aversion,
- نظرت وطرف العين يتبع الهوىI gazed, my eyes following my longing,
- هل تجزيني العامرية موقفيWill the woman of ʿĀmir reward me for my stopping
- وحنت قلوصي بعد هدء صبابةAnd my young she-camel moaned with longing after a lull.
- وقاء ما معية من أبيهMuʿayya is indeed a shield against his father
- ولم آت البيوت مطنباتNor did I come to the tents, secured with guy ropes,
- ولما نزلنا شيحة الرمل أعرضتWhen we descended the sandy hill, she turned away
- ونبئت ليلى أرسلت بشفاعةAnd I was told that Layla sent an intercessory plea
- يا صاحبي أطال الله رشدكماO my two companions, may God prolong your right guidance.
