At Dar al-Sir I swore: neither Kaffat al-Ghada

Nor Dabiq is near Wasit.

فما طابت الريح الجنوب بدابقٍ

ولكنها بالعثعثين تطيب

For the south wind was not sweet at Dabiq,

But at al-ʿAthʿathayn it is sweet.

جنوب يداوي هيجها بارح الهوى

جنوب يداوي هيجها بارح الهوى

لها بعد نوم السامرين دبيب

لها بعد نوم السامرين دبيب

A south wind whose stirring soothes love’s torment,

It creeps softly after the night-talkers sleep.
