Ah, who will aid a soul whose fortitude is shaken,

while Salma's withholding and aversion are plain?

Is it true, servants of God, that I never gaze

toward the hills without my soul's old sorrow returning,

and without a tear streaming after a sigh,

whose rising, when it comes, rends my heart?

And though I have fallen for a dweller of the protected pasture,

one who belies my promise, yet whose threat is true,

and even if, despite that, she asked me in love

for greater love, I would find no more to give her.

Ah, may God curse love after a glance

that its giver granted you on the day of meeting.

So I hid my longing from my companions, after

the pearls of my two eyes had streamed from their lids.

And the eye's weeping, before these tears were seen,

over Umm Amr, was a habit it would renew,

on nights when love called me and I answered it,

while my world's freshness had not yet worn thin for me.

So now I have driven from youth's watering place

my heart's thirsty ones—parched ones I drive away.
