فإنك واعتذارك من سويد

For you and your apology are worthless

أريني جواداً مات هزلاً لعلني

Show me a courser that died while playing, perhaps

تداركه في منصل الآل بعد ما

He rescued him from the claws of demise after

ولست بثعلب إن كان كون

I am no fox if there be

أتوعدني ودونك برق شعر

Roses are red, violets are blue

تأبد من أهله معشر

His people have parted from him for good

ثكلت دريدا إن أتت لك شتوة

May my mother lose me if another winter comes

سليم بن منصور ألما تخبروا

Salim son of Mansur, have you not been informed

فإن لم تشكروا لي فاخلفوا لي

If you are not grateful to me, then take me back

فلو أني أطعت لكان حدي

If I were obeyed, my rule would reach

إذا لم تستطع شيئاً فدعه

If you cannot do something, leave it

ويوم بخربة لا ينقضي

And a day in Kharruba will not end

وإني أخوهم عند كل ملمة

And I am their brother in every affliction,

قتلنا بعبد الله خير لدانه

We killed with Abdullah the best of his people

فإني على رغم العدو لنازل

Though enemies have shown despite for me,

متى ما تدع قومك أدع قومي

When you leave your people, I'll leave mine

أبا ذفافة من للخيل إذطردت

Abu Dufafah - who will care for the horses

أقول له والرمح يأطر متنه

I say to him while the lance ruffles his body:

أقر العين أن عصبت يداها

My eyes confess, her hands are bound

أمن ذكر سلمى ماء عينك يهمل

Does the water of your eye neglect to flow from the mention of Salma

أرث جديد الحبل من أم معبد

The rope of Ma'bad's mother has worn out with fateful consequence,

يا خالدا خالد الأيسار والنادي

O Khalid, everlasting of generosity and companionship

فويح ابن أكمة ماذا يريد

Alas son of Akme what do you want

تقول ألا تبكي أخاك وقد أرى

You say, do not weep for your brother though

لمن طلل بذات الخمس أمسى

For whom is a house ruins beside Dhat al-Khamis?

جاشت إلي النفس في يوم الفزع

My soul surged in me on the day of distress

شلت يميني ولا أشرب معتقة

My right hand is paralyzed, and I drink no wine,

ما إن رأيت ولا سمعت بمثله

The likes of him I've never seen or heard,

إما تريني كنضو اللجام

You see me either like a rushing torrent

يا بني الحارث أنتم معشر

O sons of Harith, you are a group

بني الديان ردوا مال جاري

O sons of Dhayyan, return the wealth of my neighbor,

هل بالحوادث والأيام من عجب

Is there wonder in events and days gone by

هل مثل قلبك في الأهواء معذور

Does my heart get a reprieve for its passions?

تعللت بالشطاء إذ بان صاحبي

I excused myself with friends when my companion became clear,

تمنيتني قيس بن سعد سفاهة

Qays ibn Sa'd wished me foolishness

أغرنا بصارات ورقد وطرقت

The cheeks of youth lured us, and slumbering eyes,

وجدنا أبا الجبار ضباً مورشاً

We found Abu Al-Jabbar armed to the teeth,

لقد أسمعت لو ناديت حياً

If you called out, you would hear an echo

أعبد الله إن سبتك عرسي

I worship Allah, though you abuse me,

رددنا الحي من أسد بضرب

We drove the warriors back from the lion with blows

ألا بكرت تلوم بغير قدر

Alas! Why do you blame me undeservedly?

أميم أجدي عافي الرزء واجشمي

My friend, give comfort to one in distress and embrace me,

مجاورة سواد النير حتى

Dwelling by the banks of the river until

وكل لجوج في العناق كأنها

Every obstinate wave in embrace is as though

فإن تنج يدمى عارضاك فإننا

Though you escape while Fortune's blows still miss,

حيوا تماضر واربعوا صحبي

Greet them, O clouds that pour down, and return my companions,

مدحت يزيد بن عبد المدان

I praised Yazid son of Abd al-Madan

لا نهض في مثل زماني الأول

None has risen in my first era’s likeness

لعمر بني شهاب ما أقاموا

By the life of Bani Shihab, they did not stay

أصبحت أقذف أهداف المنون كما

I now cast the targets of fate

تغيبت عن يومي عكاظ كلاهما

ولم أدر من ألقى عليه ردائه

متى كان الملوك لكم قطينا

إذا كنت في سعد وأمك منهم

ألا سائل هوازن هل أتاها

فدى لهم نفسي إذ كفوا

لعمرك ما كليب حين دلى

أعاذل إنما أفنى شبابي

أقدم العود قدامي فأتبعه

يا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغن

إليك ابن جدعان أعملتها

دعوت الحي نصرا فاستهلوا

ويوم شباك الدوم دانت لديننا

حتى إذا ملئوا جوابيهم

ولا تخفى الضغينة حيث كانت

فإنا بين غول أن تضلوا

ظواعن عن خرج النميرة غدوة

فإن يك رأسي كالثغامة نسله

أعاذل كم من نار حرب غشيتها

غشيت برابغ طللاً محيلا

من لم تفدك حياته عزاً ولم

لعمرك ما آسى حراض ابن أمه

أبلغ نعيماً وأوفى إن لقيتهما
