الطفيل الغنوي

هريت قصير عذار اللجام

A swift doe, slender at the rein

أمسى مقيما بذي العوصاء صيره

He stayed the night in Al-Awsa

بالعفر دار من جميلة هيجت

With beauty a house in Al-Ufra stirred up

ودار يظعن العاهون عنها

And a home the jealous disparage

لمن طلل بذي خيم قديم

For whom is a ruined abode in an ancient encampment

أو قارح في الغرابيات ذو نسب

A brave man of noble lineage in ghuraabiyyaat

يشاركنا فيما أصبنا وإن يكن

He shares with us though he may have

وقد حل بالجفرين جفر تبالة

The valley between Al-Jafrain has been visited

وأنت ابن أخت الصدق يوم بيوتنا

You, the son of the sister of truthfulness, on the day when our houses

وحملت كوري خلف ناجية

I carried my ball behind a she-camel

ولم أر هالكا من أهل نجد

And I have not seen one perish from the people of Najd

نبئت أن أبا شتيم يدعي

I heard Abu Shateem claims

جزى الله عنا جعفرا حين أزلفت

May Allah reward Ja'far, when our sandals

لعمري لقد زار العبيدي رهطه

By my life, the Ubaydi has surely visited his folks

فإنك إن توضخ بدلوك تحتقر

For if you draw with your bucket, you will find contemptible

أفي الله أن ندعى إذا ما فزعتم

Is it right that we're summoned when you panic

أذودهم عنكم وأنتم رئالة

I shield them from you as you stand there, weaklings,

غشيت بِقرا فرط حول مكمل

I passed by Qurra in the midst of ample dwellings,

أمن رسوم بأعلى الجزع من شرب

From the patterns at the top of an old palm tree being tapped for wine

جزى الله عوفا من موالي جنابة

May God repay 'Auf among the generous with nobility

وأبيك خير إن إبل محمد

By your father's goodness, the camels of Muhammad

محارمك امنعها من القوم إنني

Guard your sanctities from the people, verily I

تذكرت أحداجا بأعلى بسيطة

I recalled friends on a high plain

أبيت اللعن والراعي متى ما

You refused imprecation though the shepherd - whenever

فهياك والأمر الذي إن تراحبت

Be quick for the task, though its flow

تظل رياح الصيف تنسج بينه

The summer breezes continue to weave

فما أم أدراص بأرض مضلة

The mother of Daras does not know a misleading land,

لحافي لحاف الضيف والبيت بيته

My blanket is the blanket of the guest and the house is his house

أما ابن طوق فقد أوفى بذمته

Ibn Tuwaq has fulfilled his duty

صحا قلبه وأقصر اليوم باطله

His heart awoke, and the useless part of his day grew short,

عصيمة أجزيه بما قدمت له

I will reward Usaymah for what her hands have offered me,

سمونا بالجياد إلى أعاد

We rode our steeds towards the enemies

فذب عن العشيرة حيث كانت

So it melted away from the clan where it was

إذا تخازرت وما بي من خزر

When I banter but have no real jest,

أظعن بصحراء الغبيطين أم نخل

Do I see a fox in the wilderness of Al-Ghabiṭayn or is it a palm tree

فلا تأمنونا إننا رهط جندب

So do not feel safe from us, we are the band of Junadab

إذا دعاهن ارعوين لصوته

When their caller summons them with his voice

عرفت لليلى بين وقط فضلفع

I knew Layla between the remains of an abandoned camp,

وأحمر كالديباج أما سماؤه

نهوض بإشناق الديات وحملها

لا يمنع الناس مني ما أردت ولا

تأوبني هم مع الليل منصب

أشاقتك أظعان بجفن يبنبم

فنشناهم بأرماح طوال

ولما التقى الحيان ألقيت العصا

هل حبل شماء قبل البين موصول

ألم تر للحريش بقاع بدر

وإنا أناس ما تزال سوامنا

وبكل مسترخي الإزار منازل

فمشوا إلى الهيجاء في غلوائها
