- سقاني كأسه ولهاHe gave me his cup to drink, and it has
- صدف ابيض نقيA pure white shell,
- ضحك الثرى وبدا لك استبشارهThe soil laughed, and its gladness was plain to you.
- ضحى أناخوا بوادي الطلح عيرهمAt midmorning they made their caravan kneel in the valley of acacias.
- عنبري اللون في الخلقة قدAmbergris-hued in its natural form, it has
- قد أخذ الأفق في البكاءThe horizon has begun to weep,
- قل لريحانة العلا والمكارمSay to the fragrant flower of high glory and generous virtues,
- قم فاسقنيها على الورد الذي فغماRise—pour me the wine beside the rose whose fragrance fills the air,
- كسفت خدود النرجس المصفر منThe yellow narcissus's cheeks grew eclipsed from
- لم أر كالفرسك جلباباNever have I seen a robe like the peach’s,
- لما رأى العام زمان الربيعWhen the year saw that the season of spring,
- ما طلعت في قوسهاIt never rises within its bow
- نبل البنفسج فاحتوى التفضيلاThe violet proved noble and so won preeminence.
- نور الربى خول والورد سلطانThe blossoms of the hills are servants; the rose is sovereign.
- وابيض اللون ذفلي غلائلهWhite in hue, with trailing, gossamer robes,
- وأبيض ناصع صافي الأديمAnd a dazzling white blossom, with unblemished skin,
- وأخضر فستقي اللون غضAnd a green one, fresh and pistachio-hued,
- وأصفر نرجسي اللون نمامAnd a yellow, narcissus-hued ‘tattler’,
- وبنات للباقلاء تبدتAnd daughters of the broad bean appeared,
- وثلاثة لما اجتمعن بمجلسAnd three, when they gathered in company,
- وجلنارية مسكية النفسAnd a pomegranate blossom, musky-breathed,
- وحالك اللون كلون المسكAnd one dark of hue, like the color of musk,
- وزعفرانية في ثوب محزونAnd a saffron-hued fruit in the robe of one in sorrow,
- وطيب الريق عذب آب في آبAnd a luscious one, sweet of saliva, returned in August,
- ومدل بسقيه يتلقىAnd a cupbearer, proud of the drink he pours, receives
- ومضرج الاثواب مسكي النفسAnd one in crimson-dyed robes, with musk-scented breath,
- ومطبقة لفقين أحسن ما ترىAnd one with two clasped halves, the loveliest you can see,
- ومغرب اللون في مسلاخ طاؤوسAnd a marvel of color in a peacock’s skin,
- ومنادم لم أرض من أشريA boon companion whom, in my caprice, I could not abide—
