- إذا كنت عيابا على الناس فاحترسIf you are given to finding fault with people, then beware
- أصلحتني بالجود بل أفسدتنيYou set me right with generosity—rather, you spoiled me.
- أقفر ممن يحله السندAl-Sanad lies deserted of those who dwelt there,
- أمست تصفقها الجنوب وأصبحتAt evening the south wind buffeted it, and by morning it was
- أنت ابن مسلنطح البطاح ولمYou are a son of the plains’ broad expanse, and never
- إني عجبت لصوت غيث مرسلIndeed, I marvelled at the sound of rain sent forth,
- بات الخيال من الصليت مؤرقيThe phantom from al-Ṣulayt kept me wakeful all night,
- بأي الخلتين عليك أثننيFor which of the two qualities shall I praise you?
- به دخيل هوى ضمر إذا ذكرتWithin him lies a deep, hidden passion; whenever mention is made
- تخل بحاجتي واشدد قواهاDevote yourself to my need and bolster its strength.
- تقول والعيس قد شدت بأرحلهاShe says, the pale camels already saddled:
- تكاد تخرج من أنساعها مرحاShe nearly bursts free of her girth-straps in exuberance,
- جواد إذا جئته راجياA generous man—when you come to him in hope,
- حل المشيب ففرق الرأس مشتعلGray hair has settled in, so the head's parting is ablaze.
- حلاك خاتمها ومنبر ملكهاHer signet ring adorned you, and her kingdom is yours to tread;
- دع بعض أكلك رب آكل أكلةForgo some of your eating; many a person who eats a mouthful
- ذهب الشباب وصرت كالخلق الذيYouth has gone, and I have become like worn-out cloth that
- سعيت ابتغاء الشكر فيما صنعت ليI strove to give thanks for what you did for me,
- عليه فضفاضة الأردان ضافيةUpon him is a full-length coat of mail with ample sleeves,
- غبس خنابس كلهن مصدرDusky, massive lions, each one broad-chested,
- فإليك ارتحلت تشفع لي قربيSo to you I journeyed, with kinship interceding for me,
- فأنت غيثهم نفعا وطودهمSo you are their rain in beneficence, and their mountain
- فعليك تقوى الله واجعل أمرهاSo hold fast to fear of God, and make its command
- فغادرتها رمادة حمماSo it left it a heap of ash and charred coals,
- فلله عينا من رأى قط حادثاSo, God bless the eyes of whoever has ever seen an event
- فوالله ما أدري إذا جاء سائلBy God, I do not know, when a petitioner comes,
- فيجلب من جيش شآم بغارةAnd by his raid, spoils are wrested from Syria’s army—
- قصدتك عاريا من كل قنI came to you, stripped of all bondage
- قنا لم يضرها في الكريهة عندماSpears that were not impaired in battle when
- كالبيض بالأدحي يلمع في الضحىLike eggs in an ostrich’s nest, gleaming in the morning light.
- لا تأمنن امرأ أسكنت مهجتهNever trust a man in whose heart you have lodged
- لا قصرا عنها ولا بلغتهاNeither of the two fell short of it, nor was I made to attain it,
- لو يرسل الأزل الظباءIf drought were to send the gazelles
- ما كنت أحسب أن بحرا زاخراI never thought that a surging sea,
- ما مسبل زجل البعوض أنيسهNo shaggy-maned lion, with the buzzing of mosquitoes for company,
- مثل نجوم السماء إن أفلتLike the stars of the sky—if some of them set,
- نام الخلي من الهموم وبات ليThe man free of worries slept, while for me remained
- نامت خلاخلها وجال وشاحهاHer anklets slept, and her sash wandered;
- وإذا جلست مع الندى فلا تصلAnd when you sit with the company, do not add
- وأشعث طلاع الثنايا مباركAnd a blessed, tousle-haired man, ever climbing mountain passes,
- واعتام كهلك من ثقيف كفأهAnd your elder chose his equal from Thaqif;
- والمال جنة ذي المعايب إن يصبAnd wealth is a shield for a man of faults: if he acts rightly,
- وترى المشيب مبصرا ومحكماAnd you see gray hair bestowing insight and judgment.
- ولاة حماة يحسم الله ذو القوىRulers, protectors—God, the Lord of might, eradicates
- يا صلت إن أباك رهن منيةO Ṣalt, your father is hostage to a death
- يابن الخلائف ما لي بعد تقربةO son of caliphs, why, after drawing near
