وَإِذاand when جَلَستَyou sit مَعَwith النّدىthe company فَلاthen do not تَصِلjoin
وَإِذا جَلَستَ مَعَ النّدى فَلا تَصِل
لَهُمto them الحَديثthe conversation بِقصّةwith a tale تَعياهاyou cannot recount it
لَهُم الحَديث بِقصّة تَعياها
And when you sit with the company, do not add
And if you sit with companions, do not
to their conversation a tale you cannot recount,
Relate to them a story you find weary,
حَتّىuntil تُثَقِّفَهاyou refine it وَتُحكِمand perfect وَعيَهاunderstanding of it
حَتّى تُثَقِّفَها وَتُحكِم وَعيَها
فَتُبينَهاthen you explain it كَحَديثِlike the account of مَنone who أَحصاهاhas fully accounted for it
فَتُبينَها كَحَديثِ مَن أَحصاها
until you have polished it and firmly grasped it;
Until you make it eloquent and strengthen its ideas,
then explain it like one who knows it in full.
So you explain it like one who has mastered it.
ماذاwhatever خُصِصتَyou were singled out بِنِعمَةٍwith a blessing وَرُزِقتَهاand you were granted it
ماذا خُصِصتَ بِنِعمَةٍ وَرُزِقتَها
مِنfrom فَضلِthe bounty of رَبِّكَyour Lord مِنَّةَa favor تَغشاهاyou enjoy it
مِن فَضلِ رَبِّكَ مِنَّةَ تَغشاها
Whatever blessing you are singled out for and granted
What blessings have you been given and granted
from your Lord’s bounty—a favor you enjoy—
From the grace of your Lord, that envelope you?
فَاِبغِthen seek الزِيادَةincrease فيin الَّذيthat which أَعطيتَهُyou were given it
فَاِبغِ الزِيادَة في الَّذي أَعطيتَهُ
وَتمامُand the fulfillment of ذاكَthat بِشُكرِby thanking مَنthe one who أَعطاهاgave it
وَتمامُ ذاكَ بِشُكرِ مَن أَعطاها
seek an increase in what you have been given;
Seek increase in what you have been given,
and that is fulfilled by thanking the one who bestowed it.
And gratitude to the Giver completes that.
وَاِترُكand leave مُصاحَبةَcompanionship with الِئامِthe ignoble وَدَعهُمُand leave them
وَاِترُك مُصاحَبةَ الِئامِ وَدَعهُمُ
تَركَthe shunning of المَخوفَةِwhat is feared بِالرَدىfor bringing death عَدواهاits contagion
تَركَ المَخوفَةِ بِالرَدى عَدواها
And shun the company of the ignoble, and leave them
Leave off accompanying the wretched, and leave them -
as you would shun a malady whose contagion is feared to bring death.
Like leaving an affliction that spreads its harm.
وَاِترُكand avoid مُعانَدَةَcontending with اللَجوجِthe obstinate one وَلاand do not تَكُنbe
وَاِترُك مُعانَدَةَ اللَجوجِ وَلا تَكُن
بَينَamong النَدىthe company هُذُرَّةًa chatterbox تَيّاهاconceited
بَينَ النَدى هُذُرَّةً تَيّاها
And avoid contending with the obstinate, and do not be
Leave off contending with the stubborn, and do not be
a conceited chatterbox among the company.
Among companions a babbler spreading nonsense.
وَإِذاand when عَتَبتَyou find fault عَلىwith اِمرِىءٍa man فيover خَلَّةٍa fault
وَإِذا عَتَبتَ عَلى اِمرِىءٍ في خَلَّةٍ
وَرَأَيتَهُand you see him قَدalready ذَلَّhe was humbled حينَwhen أَتاهاhe committed it
وَرَأَيتَهُ قَد ذَلَّ حينَ أَتاها
And when you reproach a man for a fault,
And if you reproach a person in private,
and see him humbled when he commits it,
And you see him humbled when it reaches him,
فَاِحذَرthen beware وُقوعَكَyour falling مَرَّةًonce فيinto مِثلَهاits like
فَاِحذَر وُقوعَكَ مَرَّةً في مِثلَها
فَيَبُثُّthen he spreads عَنكَabout you نَضوحَهاits scent وَثناهاand talk of it
فَيَبُثُّ عَنكَ نَضوحَها وَثناها
beware of falling even once into a similar fault,
Beware of falling once into the like of it,
lest he spread its scent and talk of it about you.
So he spreads about you its outpouring and folds.
