نامَslept الخَلِيُّthe carefree man مِنfrom الهُمومِworries وَباتَand remained overnight ليfor me
ليلٌa night أَكابِدُهI struggle through it وَهَمٌّand worry مَضلِعُcrushing
The man free of worries slept, while for me remained
A night I struggle through, and a crushing worry.
وَسَهِرتُand I stayed awake لاnot أسرِىI travel by night وَلاnor فيin لّذَّةٍpleasure
أَرَقىI lie sleepless وَأَغفَلُand utterly heedless ماwhat لَقيتُI have suffered الهُجَّعُthe slumberers
I stayed awake, neither traveling by night nor taking pleasure;
I lie sleepless; the slumberers are utterly heedless of what I have suffered.
أَبغيI seek وُجوهَways مَخارِجيof my escape مِنfrom تُهمَةٍan accusation
أَزَمَتclosed in عَلَيupon me وَسُدَّand was barred مِنهاfrom it المَطلَعُthe way out
I seek ways of escape from an accusation
That closed in upon me, its way out barred.
جَزَعاًin anguish لِمَعتَبَةِat the reproach of الوَليدِal-Walid وَلَمand not أَكُنI was
مَنfrom قَبلِbefore ذاكthat مِنat الحَوادِثِmisfortunes أَجزَعُI panic
In anguish at al-Walid's reproach, though I had not been
One to panic at misfortunes before this.
ياO بنَson of الخَلائِفِthe caliphs إِنَّindeed سُخطَكَyour anger لامرِىءٍtoward a man
أَمسَيتَyou have become عِصمَتَهُhis safeguard بَلاءٌan affliction مُفظِعُdreadful
O son of caliphs, your anger toward a man
Whose protector you have become is a dreadful affliction.
فَلأُنزِعَنَّso I shall surely desist عَنfrom الَّذيwhat لَمnot تَهوَهُyou liked it
إِنif كانَthere is ليfor me وَرَأَيتَand you judge ذلِكَthat مَنزعُa way to desist
So I shall surely desist from what you did not like,
If there is a way for me to desist, and you judge it so.
فَاِعطِفso turn kindly فِداكَyour ransom أَبيmy father عَلَيَّtoward me تَوَسُّعاًout of generosity
وَفَضيلَةًand excellence فَعَلىfor in الفَضيلَةِexcellence تَتبَعُyou are followed
So turn kindly toward me—may my father be your ransom—out of generosity
And excellence, for in excellence you are followed.
فَلَقَدfor indeed كَفاكَhas sufficed you وَزادَand exceeded ماwhat قَدalready نالَنيbefell me
إِنif كُنتyou are ليfor me بِبَلاءwith an ordeal ضُرٍّof harm تَقنَعُyou are content
For what has befallen me has been enough for you, and more,
If you are content with my ordeal of suffering.
سِمَةٌa sign لِذاكَof that عَلَيَّupon me جِسمٌa body شاحِبٌwan
بادٍplain to see تَحَسُّرُهُits wasting وَلَونٌand a complexion أَسفَعُdusky
A sign of that upon me is a wan body,
Its wasting plain to see, and a dusky complexion.
إِنif كُنتَyou were فيover ذَنبٍa sin عَتَبتَyou took offense فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
عَمّاfrom what كَرَهتَyou disliked لَنازِعٌsurely desisting مُتَصَرِّعُsubmitting humbly
If you took offense at a sin, then I
Will surely desist from what you disliked, submitting humbly.
وَيَئِستُand I lost hope مِنكَin you فَكُلُّso every عُسرٍhardship باسِطٌstretching out
كَفّاa hand إِلَيَّtoward me وَكُلُّand every يُسرٍease أَقطَعُhandless
And I have lost hope in you, so every hardship stretches
A hand toward me, while every ease is handless.
مِنfrom بَعدِafter أَخذيmy taking hold مِنamong حِبالِكَyour cords بِالَّذيof the one that
قَدindeed كُنتُI was أَحسَبُthinking أَنَّهُthat it لاnot يُقطَعُwould be severed
After I had grasped, among your cords, the one
I had thought could never be severed.
فَاَربُبso nurture صَنيعَكَyour kindness بيto me فَإِنَّfor indeed بِأَعيُنٍbefore the eyes
لِلكاشِحينَof the foes وَسَمعِهِمand their hearing ماwhat تَصنعُyou do
So nurture your kindness to me, for before the eyes
Of your foes, and within their hearing, is what you do.
أَدَفعتَنيhave you cast me off حَتّىuntil اِنقَطَعتُI was cut off وَسُدِّدَتand were barred
عَنّيfrom me الوُجوهthe avenues وَلَمand not يَكُنthere was ليfor me مَدفَعُa refuge
Have you cast me off until I was cut off, and closed
To me were the avenues, with no refuge for me?
وَرُجيتُand hopes were placed in me وَاِتُّقِيَتand were feared يَدايَmy two hands وَقيلَand it was said قَدalready
أَمسىhe has become يَضُرُّhe harms إِذاif أَحَبَّhe wishes وَيَنفَعُand benefits
And hopes were placed in me, my hands were feared, and it was said: 'He has
Become able to harm if he wishes, and to benefit.'
وَدَخَلتُand I entered فيinto حَرَمِthe sanctuary of الذِمامِpledged protection وَحاطَنيand surrounded me
خَفَرٌa safeguard أَخَذتُI took hold بِهof it وَعَهدٌand a covenant مولِعُbinding
And I entered the sanctuary of pledged protection, and was surrounded
By a safeguard I had secured, and a binding covenant.
أَفهادِمٌwill you then demolish ماwhat قَدalready بَنَيتَyou built وَخافِضٌand lowering
شَرَفيmy honor وَأَنتَthough you لِغَيرِfor other than ذلِكَthat أَوسَعُmore capable
Will you then demolish what you have built, and lower
My honor, though you have ample scope to act otherwise?
أَفَلاdid you not خَشيتَfear شَماتَthe gloating of قَومٍpeople فُتَّهُمyou outstripped them
سَبقاin precedence وَأَنفُسُهُمwhile their souls عَلَيكَover you تَقَطَّعُare torn apart
Did you not fear the gloating of people you outstripped
In precedence, while their souls are torn apart over you?
وَفَضَلتَand you excelled فيin الحَسَبِancestral honor الأَشَمِّlofty عَلَيهِمover them
وَصَنَعتَand you did فيamong الأَقوامِthe peoples ماwhat لَمnot يَصنَعواthey did
And you excelled them in lofty ancestral honor,
And among the peoples you did what they never did.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though آنُفَهُمtheir noses بِكُلِّwith every صَنيعَةٍfavor
أَسدَيتَهاyou bestowed it وَجَميلِand gracious فِعلٍdeed تُجدَعُare cut off
It is as though their noses, with every favor
You bestowed and every gracious deed, are cut off.
وَدّواthey wished لَوif only أَنَّهُمthat they يَنالُwould afflict أَكُفَّهُمtheir palms
شَلَلparalysis وَأَنَّكَand that you عَنfrom صَنيعِكَyour kindness تَنزِعُdesist
They wished that their palms might be stricken
With paralysis, and that you would desist from your kindness,
أَوor تَستَليمُyou incur blame فَيَجعَلوكَso they could make you أُسوَةًan equal
وَأَبيyet refused المَلامَblame لَكَfor you النّدىgenerosity وَالمَوضِعُand standing
Or incur blame, so they could make you their equal;
Yet generosity and standing have refused to let you be blamed.
