- أبا بحر سلام الله يترىO Abu Bahr, God's peace comes unceasingly
- أبثك أم أصونك يا خليليShall I confide in you, or spare you, my friend?
- أبعيد الشباب هوى وصباAfter youth—love and youthful ardor?
- أشار إليك بتسليمةHe gestured to you with a greeting;
- أصبحت تدمير مصرا شبهاTudmir has become like Egypt,
- أضاء ببرقة برق لموعA brilliant lightning flash shone over a stony tract;
- أعرى من المدح الطرف الذي ركباI leave unpraised the steed that he once rode,
- أعلوا نسيم الريح ثم ابعثوا بهMake the wind’s breeze languid, then send it
- أفدي الذي أرشف المقلين ريقتهI would ransom him who let the needy sip his saliva,
- أنوما وقد بان الخليط تذوقDo you taste sleep when the companions have departed?
- أولوع وغربة وسقامPassion, exile, and sickness?
- خذ في الأشعار على الخببTake up verse in the khabab metre;
- رعاك الله هذا وقت ضيقMay God protect you; this is a time of hardship.
- سأرمي بنبلي ذائدا عن حمى نبليI shall shoot my arrows, defending the sanctuary of my nobility,
- سقى الله أيام الصبابة والهوىMay God water the days of yearning and love,
- سل حارسي روضة الجمالAsk the two guardians of beauty's garden
- سلام من لدن روض السلامA greeting from the garden of peace
- صغر الرأس وطول العنقA small head and a long neck
- عجبت من بزتي إذ أخلقتShe marveled at my attire when it grew threadbare,
- فقبلت إثرك فوق الثرىSo I kissed your footprint upon the earth,
- فلما رأونا باديا ركباتناAnd when they saw us with our knees bared
- قمر تطلع والهواء سماؤهA moon has risen, and the air is his sky.
- كلمته فاصفر من خجلI spoke to him, and he turned yellow with shyness,
- لم تبق عندي للصبا لذةNo pleasure of youth remains for me
- لم يعبك الي بعينك عنديThat flaw in your eyes has not marred you in my sight;
- ما عسى تبلغ شكرا ما عسىHow far can you go in thanks—how far—
- هبا قليلا أيها النئمانRise a little, you two sleepers,
- هنيئا لك الإقبال واليمن والنجحMay good fortune, blessing, and success be yours!
- وتقول والعبرات سائلةAnd she says, while tears are flowing,
- وعلى الفؤاد لواعج مذ غبتمAnd upon the heart lie burning pangs since you went away,
- وكاتب ألفاظه وكتبهThere is a writer whose words and writings
- وكأنما سكن الأراقم جوفهاAnd as though speckled serpents had dwelt within it
- ولكن الجحاش تجيد رعياAnd yet the donkey foals excel at grazing
- ولم أدخل الحمام ساعة بينهمAnd I did not enter the bathhouse at the hour of parting from them
- ولو بقدرك أهديWere I to give according to your worth,
- يا أهل تدمير إن جاركمO people of Tudmir, indeed your neighbor
- يا خيل محيي ملة الإسلامO cavalry of the reviver of Islam's faith,
- يا صاحبي وما البخيل بصاحبيO my two companions—and the miser is no companion of mine—
- يا ليلة جادت اللياليO night that the nights bestowed,
- يا من يخط كتاب الله وهو لهO you who transcribe God's Book, yet are
- يا منزلا كان أهلوه لرفعتهO dwelling, whose inhabitants, because of its loftiness,
- يا ويح من بالمغرب الأقصى ثوىAlas for him who dwells in the farthest West,
- يقل من الناس عندي الكثيرTo me, a multitude of people counts for little,
