يَاO لَيلَةًa night جادَتِbestowed generously اللَّياليthe nights
يَا لَيلَةً جادَتِ اللَّيالي
بِهاwith it عَلَىupon رَغمِthe humiliation of أَنفِthe nose of دَهرِيmy fate
بِها عَلَى رَغمِ أَنفِ دَهرِي
O night that the nights bestowed,
in defiance of my fate!
لِلسَّيلِfor the flood فِيهَاin it عَلَيَّupon me نُعمَىa boon
لِلسَّيلِ فِيهَا عَلَيَّ نُعمَى
يَقصُرُfalls short عَنهَاof it لِسَانُthe tongue of شُكرِيmy gratitude
يَقصُرُ عَنهَا لِسَانُ شُكرِي
That night, the flood granted me a boon
beyond the reach of my grateful tongue.
أبَاتَlodged overnight فِيin مَنزِليmy home حَبيبِيmy beloved
أبَاتَ فِي مَنزِلي حَبيبِي
وقامَand served فيamong أهلِهِhis family بِعُذرِas an excuse
وقامَ في أهلِهِ بِعُذرِ
It lodged my beloved overnight in my home,
and served as an excuse before his family.
فبتُّso I spent the night لاno حالَةٌstate كَحَالِيlike my state
فبتُّ لا حالَةٌ كَحَالِي
ضَجيحَbedfellow (probable intended meaning) بَدرٍa full moon صَرِيعَfelled by سُكرِintoxication
ضَجيحَ بَدرٍ صَرِيعَ سُكرِ
So I spent the night—no state like mine—
a full moon’s bedfellow, laid low by intoxication.
يَاO لَيلَةNight القَدرِthe Decree فِيamong اللَّيَالِيthe nights
يَا لَيلَة القَدرِ فِي اللَّيَالِي
لأنتِindeed you خَيرٌbetter مِنthan أَلفِa thousand شَهرِmonth
لأنتِ خَيرٌ مِن أَلفِ شَهرِ
O Night of Decree among nights,
you are indeed better than a thousand months!
