يَاO خَيلَcavalry of مُحييthe reviver of مِلّةthe faith of الإِسلاَمِIslam
يَا خَيلَ مُحيي مِلّة الإِسلاَمِ
فُوزيgain بِكُلِّwith every غَنِيمَةٍspoil وَسَلامَand safety
فُوزي بِكُلِّ غَنِيمَةٍ وَسَلامَ
O cavalry of the reviver of Islam's faith,
O horses reviving the religion of Islam
Gain every spoil and safe deliverance.
Be victorious in every spoil of war and peace
وَطَإِيand tread بلادَthe lands of الشِّركِidolatry مُدرِكَةَattaining المُنَىdesired ends
وَطَإِي بلادَ الشِّركِ مُدرِكَةَ المُنَى
مَنصورةًgranted victory مَنشُورَةَunfurled الأعلامِthe banners
مَنصورةً مَنشُورَةَ الأعلامِ
And tread the lands of idolatry, attaining your desires,
Trample the lands of polytheism to achieve your purpose
Victorious, with banners unfurled.
Triumphant, with standards raised high
وَاستَنجِزِيand seek fulfillment فِيهَاin them الوُعُودَthe promises بِفَتحِهَاof their conquest
وَاستَنجِزِي فِيهَا الوُعُودَ بِفَتحِهَا
فَلَعَلَّهَاfor perhaps they ادُّخِرَتwere reserved لِهَذاfor this العَامِyear
فَلَعَلَّهَا ادُّخِرَت لِهَذا العَامِ
And seek there fulfillment of the promises of conquest,
And fulfill therein the promises of its opening
For perhaps they were reserved for this year.
Perhaps it was kept for this year
لِلَّهِto God (expressing admiration) جَيشُthe army of خَلِيفَةًa caliph رَايَاتُهُhis banners
لِلَّهِ جَيشُ خَلِيفَةً رَايَاتُهُ
مَحفُوفَةٌsurrounded بالنُّجحِby success فِيin الإقدَامِbold advance
مَحفُوفَةٌ بالنُّجحِ فِي الإقدَامِ
How wondrous the caliph's army! Its banners
For God, the army of the Caliph whose banners
Are attended by success in bold advance.
Are surrounded by success in daring
مَشحوذَةٌsharpened عَزَمَاتُهُhis resolves مَعصومَةٌprotected from error
مَشحوذَةٌ عَزَمَاتُهُ مَعصومَةٌ
آراؤُهُhis judgments فِيin النَّقضِundoing والإِبرامِand binding
آراؤُهُ فِي النَّقضِ والإِبرامِ
His resolves are sharpened; unerring
Their resolves sharpened, their views protected
Are his judgments in undoing and binding.
In negation and affirmation
تَغزوwage war مِلاءِكَةُthe angels of السَّمَاءِheaven إِذَاwhen غَزاhe wages war
تَغزو مِلاءِكَةُ السَّمَاءِ إِذَا غَزا
مَأمُومَةًled مِنهُby him بِخَيرِby the finest إِمَامِleader
مَأمُومَةً مِنهُ بِخَيرِ إِمَامِ
Heaven's angels wage war whenever he does,
The angels of heaven raid when he raids
Led by him, the finest of leaders.
Following him in the best leadership
مَحجوبةveiled الأعيانِbodily forms وَقعُthe impact of سلاحِهَاtheir weapons
مَحجوبة الأعيانِ وَقعُ سلاحِهَا
بِالرُّوحِupon the spirit لَيسَnot بِظَاهِرِupon the surface of الأجسَامِbodies
بِالرُّوحِ لَيسَ بِظَاهِرِ الأجسَامِ
Their forms are veiled; their weapons' blows
Their essence veiled, the impact of their weapons
Fall upon the spirit, not the surface of bodies.
By the soul not apparent bodies
فَلأجلso because of ذَاكَthat يُرَىis seen القَتِيلُthe slain ولاand not يُرَىis seen
فَلأجل ذَاكَ يُرَى القَتِيلُ ولا يُرَى
أَثَرٌa mark بِهِupon him مِنfrom ذَابِلٍa supple spear وحُسَامِand a keen sword
أَثَرٌ بِهِ مِن ذَابِلٍ وحُسَامِ
Thus the slain is seen, yet unseen
So for that the slain is seen but not
Is any mark upon him from a supple spear or keen sword.
Any trace by him of frailty and swords
قَتلَىthose slain by المَلائِكِthe angels لاno كِلىkidneys مَفرِيّةsplit open
قَتلَى المَلائِكِ لا كِلى مَفرِيّة
بالسَّمهَرِيِّby a rigid spear ولاnor قَذالٌa nape هَامِstreaming with blood
بالسَّمهَرِيِّ ولا قَذالٌ هَامِ
Those slain by angels have no kidneys split
The slain angels have no fleeing for refuge
By a rigid spear, nor napes streaming with blood.
By cavalry or infantry columns
وَمِنَand among العَجَائِبِthe marvels أنthat تَكُونَare جِرَاحُهُمtheir wounds
وَمِنَ العَجَائِبِ أن تَكُونَ جِرَاحُهُم
لاnot فيin جُسُومِهِمُtheir bodies ولاnor فِيin الهَامِthe heads
لا في جُسُومِهِمُ ولا فِي الهَامِ
And one of the marvels is that their wounds
And of the wonders that their wounds
Are neither in their bodies nor their heads.
Are neither in their bodies nor their shoulders
تَرَكَhe abandoned الهُوَيناease واستَقَلَّand rose بِهِمّةِwith a resolve
تَرَكَ الهُوَينا واستَقَلَّ بِهِمّةِ
نَشَأَتarose عنfrom الإِجلالِreverence والإِعظامِand veneration
نَشَأَت عن الإِجلالِ والإِعظامِ
He abandoned ease and rose with a resolve
He left distraction and took to the resolve
Born of reverence and veneration.
That arose from veneration and glorification
وَرَأىand deemed الجِهَادَholy war بِنَفسِهِwith his person وبمالِهِand with his wealth
وَرَأى الجِهَادَ بِنَفسِهِ وبمالِهِ
أزكىthe purest of الحُظوظِshares وَأَوفَرَand the fullest of الأقسَامِportions
أزكى الحُظوظِ وَأَوفَرَ الأقسَامِ
And deemed holy war with his person and wealth
And saw jihad by himself and his money
The purest of shares and the fullest of portions.
The most blessed and abundant portions
فَسَرىso he marched by night بِمِلءِwith what fills الأُفقِthe horizon يَحشُوhe fills أرضَهُits earth
فَسَرى بِمِلءِ الأُفقِ يَحشُو أرضَهُ
بِسَنابِكٍwith hooves وَسَماءَهُand its sky بِقَتامِwith dust
بِسَنابِكٍ وَسَماءَهُ بِقَتامِ
So he marched by night with a host filling the horizon, filling its earth
So he traveled the horizons filling his land
With hooves, and its sky with dust.
With towers and his sky with darkness
يَغشىhe confronts بِهِwith it الأَهوالَterrors لاnot يعتَاقُهُhinders him
يَغشى بِهِ الأَهوالَ لا يعتَاقُهُ
خَرقٌa wilderness سَحِيقٌfar-stretching أوor عُبابٌa surging sea طَامِswollen
خَرقٌ سَحِيقٌ أو عُبابٌ طَامِ
With it he faces terrors; he is not hindered by
To cover therewith the terrors, impenetrable
A far-flung wilderness or a swollen, surging sea.
To piercing cries or accumulating clouds
يجتابُhe crosses ذاthis one بالخَيلِwith cavalry مُعلَمَةًbearing battle marks وَذَاand that one
يجتابُ ذا بالخَيلِ مُعلَمَةً وَذَا
بِالمُنشآتِwith towering ships عَلَيهِupon it كالأَعلامِlike mountains
بِالمُنشآتِ عَلَيهِ كالأَعلامِ
He crosses the one with battle-marked cavalry, and the other
Assailing here with cavalry marked and there
With towering ships upon it, like mountains.
With engines of war like flags
مِنof كُلِّevery مِصلِيتٍbold warrior تَقَلَّدَgirded on سَيفَهُhis sword
مِن كُلِّ مِصلِيتٍ تَقَلَّدَ سَيفَهُ
فَرَأيتso you see صَمصاماًa keen blade علىupon صَمصامِa keen blade
فَرَأيت صَمصاماً على صَمصامِ
With many a bold warrior who has girded on his sword,
From every prayer niche he wore his sword
So you see a keen blade upon a keen blade.
So I saw scabbard over scabbard
أُسدٌlions فَرائِسُهاtheir prey العِداthe foes ألِفَتhave grown accustomed لَهَاfor themselves
أُسدٌ فَرائِسُها العِدا ألِفَت لَهَا
ظِلَّthe shade of القَناspears بَدَلاًinstead منof الآجامِthickets
ظِلَّ القَنا بَدَلاً من الآجامِ
Lions whose prey is the foe, who have grown accustomed to
A lion whose cubs the enemies befriended
The shade of spears in place of thickets.
The shade of spears instead of tents
فأنيthen [he came; uncertain text] رِباطRibāṭ (fortified station) الفَتحal-Fatḥ (conquest) مَرجُواًhoped for لَهُfor him
فأني رِباط الفَتح مَرجُواً لَهُ
مِنهُfrom it افتتاحُthe conquest of عِراقِهاits Iraq والشّامand al-Shām (Syria)
مِنهُ افتتاحُ عِراقِها والشّام
Then [he reached] Ribāṭ al-Fatḥ, with hopes for him
So I yearn for the covenant of victory hoping from it
Of conquering its Iraq and al-Shām from there.
The opening of its Iraq and Levant
ألقىhe laid down بِأَندلسٍin al-Andalus كَلاكِلَthe chests of عَزمِهِhis resolve
ألقى بِأَندلسٍ كَلاكِلَ عَزمِهِ
طَلقَcheerful الجَبينthe brow مُبارَكَblessed الإلمَامthe arrival
طَلقَ الجَبين مُبارَكَ الإلمَام
In al-Andalus he laid the heavy chests of his resolve,
He cast Andalusia into the tumult of his resolve
With a cheerful brow and a blessed arrival.
A serene forehead of blessed inventiveness
فحمىso he protected حِمَىthe sanctuary of الدينthe faith الحنِيفِّيupright and monotheistic الَّذيwhich
فحمى حِمَى الدين الحنِيفِّي الَّذي
ماnot زالceased يَدفَعُhe repels attacks دونَهُin its defense ويُحامِيand protects
ما زال يَدفَعُ دونَهُ ويُحامِي
He guarded the sanctuary of the upright, monotheistic faith,
Thus he protected the sanctity of the true Hanifi faith
Which he has ever defended and protected.
Which ceaselessly repels and defends
حَتَّىuntil أَدامَhe made enduring عَلَىupon الزَّمَانِtime وَأهلِهِand its people
حَتَّى أَدامَ عَلَى الزَّمَانِ وَأهلِهِ
نِعَماًblessings تَبَزُّoutstrip حوادثthe calamities of الأيَّامِthe days
نِعَماً تَبَزُّ حوادث الأيَّامِ
Until he made lasting for time and its people
Until he established for the age and its people
Blessings that outstrip the calamities of the days.
Blessings more wondrous than the days' events
وَحَبَاand he bestowed gifts فأَغنَاهُمand so enriched them فَأصبَحَso became أمنُهُمtheir safety
وَحَبَا فأَغنَاهُم فَأصبَحَ أمنُهُم
أمنَينِtwofold safety مِنfrom عُدمٍdestitution بِهِthrough him وَحِمامِand death
أمنَينِ مِن عُدمٍ بِهِ وَحِمامِ
He bestowed gifts and enriched them, so their safety became
And endowed them so enriched them that their security became
Through him, a double safety—from want and death.
Two securities from loss through it and sanctuary
فَجَزَىso may He reward الإِلَهُGod مُعِزَّthe exalter of دِينِthe faith of نَبِيِّهHis Prophet
فَجَزَى الإِلَهُ مُعِزَّ دِينِ نَبِيِّه
جَنّاتِgardens of رضوانٍdivine favor وَدَارَand an abode of مُقَامِlasting residence
جَنّاتِ رضوانٍ وَدَارَ مُقَامِ
May God reward the exalter of His Prophet's faith
So may God reward the strengthener of the faith of His Prophet
With gardens of divine favor and a lasting abode.
With gardens of bliss and the abode of eternity
وَقَضَىand may He decree لَهُfor him بالنَّصرِwith victory فِيagainst أعدَائِهِhis enemies
وَقَضَى لَهُ بالنَّصرِ فِي أعدَائِهِ
وَأنَالَهُand grant him بالسَّعدِwith good fortune كُلَّevery مَرَامِaim
وَأنَالَهُ بالسَّعدِ كُلَّ مَرَامِ
And decree victory for him over his enemies,
And decree for him victory over his enemies
And, with good fortune, grant him every aim.
And grant him in fortune all his wishes
يَاO ابنَson of الأَئِمّةِthe leaders مِنof مُضَرَMuḍar الأُلَىwho
يَا ابنَ الأَئِمّةِ مِن مُضَرَ الأُلَى
نَصَبُواthey raised مَنَازَ[beacon; uncertain text] الحلِّrelease from consecration وَالإحرَامِand ritual consecration
نَصَبُوا مَنَازَ الحلِّ وَالإحرَامِ
O son of the leaders of Muḍar, who
O son of the imams from glorious Mudar
Raised the [beacon] of release and ritual consecration,
Who established the stations of unwinding and pilgrimage
مِنof قَيسِQays عَيلانَʿAylān الذِينَwho بِهَديِهِمthrough their guidance
مِن قَيسِ عَيلانَ الذِينَ بِهَديِهِم
شُدَّتwere fastened عَلَىupon التَّقوَىpiety عُرَىthe bonds of الإِسلامِIslam
شُدَّت عَلَى التَّقوَى عُرَى الإِسلامِ
Of Qays ʿAylān, through whose guidance
From Qais Ailan who by their guidance
The bonds of Islam were firmly tied to piety.
Strengthened the bonds of Islam's piety
المُخمِدونَthose who quenched بجدّهِمthrough their zeal وَحَديدِهِمand their steel
المُخمِدونَ بجدّهِم وَحَديدِهِم
فيin الحَربbattle جَمرَةthe live coal of عُبّدِthe worshippers of الأصنَامِidols
في الحَرب جَمرَة عُبّدِ الأصنَامِ
Those who quenched, through their zeal and steel,
Quenching with their strength and steel in war
In battle, the live coal of the idol-worshippers;
The embers of idol worshippers
والمُطعِمونَand those who fed إِذِwhen السِّنونَlean years تَتابَعَتfollowed one another
والمُطعِمونَ إِذِ السِّنونَ تَتابَعَت
والمُحسِنونَand those excelling in كَفَالةguardianship of الأَيتامِorphans
والمُحسِنونَ كَفَالة الأَيتامِ
And those who fed others when lean years followed one another,
And feeding when years grew lean
And those who gave excellent care to orphans.
And doing good as guarantors of orphans
طابُواthey were noble وَطِبتًَand you were noble فَقَلَّودكso they entrusted you [apparent typo] لِعِلمِهمbecause of their knowledge
طابُوا وَطِبتًَ فَقَلَّودك لِعِلمِهم
أمرَthe affairs of الأنامِhumankind ملامةُthe reproach of اللَّوَّامِfault-finders
أمرَ الأنامِ ملامةُ اللَّوَّامِ
They were noble, and you were noble; knowing you, they entrusted you with
They approved and you were approved so they garlanded you for their knowledge
The affairs of humankind; the reproach of fault-finders.
Censuring the affairs of mankind, blaming detractors
وَرَعَيتَand you tended ماwhat استَرعَوكَthey entrusted to you مُجتَهِداًdiligently وَلَمand not
وَرَعَيتَ ما استَرعَوكَ مُجتَهِداً وَلَم
تَأخُذكَdeterred you فيهِconcerning it مَلامَةُthe reproach of اللَّوامِfault-finders
تَأخُذكَ فيهِ مَلامَةُ اللَّوامِ
And you diligently tended what they entrusted to your care, and no
And you heeded what they entrusted you, diligent and not
Reproach of fault-finders deterred you in it.
Taking from it the blame of blamers
لَمّاwhen قَفلتَyou returned منَfrom الجِهَادِholy war وَبَشّرَتand gave glad tidings
لَمّا قَفلتَ منَ الجِهَادِ وَبَشّرَت
بإِيابِof the return of جَيشِكَyour army ألسُنُthe tongues of الأَقلامِpens
بإِيابِ جَيشِكَ ألسُنُ الأَقلامِ
When you returned from holy war, and glad tidings were given
When you returned from jihad and heralded
Of your army's return by the tongues of pens,
With your army's return the pens' tongues
بَعَثَتsent بَلَنِسيةٌValencia إلَيكَto you بِوَفدِهَاwith its delegation
بَعَثَت بَلَنِسيةٌ إلَيكَ بِوَفدِهَا
عَنon behalf of كُلِّevery مُحتَنِكseasoned man بِهَاwithin it وَغلامِand youth
عَن كُلِّ مُحتَنِك بِهَا وَغلامِ
Valencia sent you its delegation
Valencia sent to you a delegation for all
On behalf of every seasoned man and youth within it,
Its bleeding youth and boys
مُستَنزِلينَseeking to draw down الرُّحمَmercy مِنكَfrom you لأهلِهَاfor its people
مُستَنزِلينَ الرُّحمَ مِنكَ لأهلِهَا
مُستَمطرِينَseeking rain from سَحَائِبَthe clouds of الإِنعَامِbounty
مُستَمطرِينَ سَحَائِبَ الإِنعَامِ
Seeking to draw down your mercy for its people,
Seeking your mercy for its people
Seeking rain from the clouds of bounty.
And rains of favor pouring down
رَفَعُواthey raised ضَراعَتَهُمtheir humble pleas إِلَيكَto you وَبَلّغُواand conveyed
رَفَعُوا ضَراعَتَهُم إِلَيكَ وَبَلّغُوا
عَنهُمon their behalf أبَرَّmost sincere تَحِيّةٍa greeting وَسلامand salutation
عَنهُم أبَرَّ تَحِيّةٍ وَسلام
They raised their humble pleas to you and conveyed
They lifted their plea to you and conveyed
On their behalf the most sincere greeting and salutation,
The fondest greetings and peace
مستنجزينseeking fulfillment of مواعِدpromises of النَّصرِvictory الَّتِيthat
مستنجزين مواعِد النَّصرِ الَّتِي
وُعِدواthey were promised بِهَاwith them مِنof نَيلِattaining كُلِّevery مَرَامِaim
وُعِدوا بِهَا مِن نَيلِ كُلِّ مَرَامِ
Seeking fulfillment of the promises of victory that
Seeking fulfillment of the promised victory
Were made to them, of attaining every aim;
To attain all wishes
وَمُعَأوِدينَand returning to اللّثمَkissing فيupon يَدِكَyour hand الَّتِيwhich
وَمُعَأوِدينَ اللّثمَ في يَدِكَ الَّتِي
تشفىcures مُقبِّلهاits kisser مِنَof الإِعدَامِdestitution
تشفى مُقبِّلها مِنَ الإِعدَامِ
And returning to kiss your hand, which
And repeating kisses on the hand that
Cures its kisser of destitution.
Saves those kissing it from annihilation
فَأهنأso rejoice أمِيرَCommander of المُؤمنِينَthe Faithful بِغزوَةٍin a campaign
فَأهنأ أمِيرَ المُؤمنِينَ بِغزوَةٍ
خَصّتsingled out أنوفَthe noses of عِداكyour enemies بالأرغامِfor rubbing in dust
خَصّت أنوفَ عِداك بالأرغامِ
So rejoice, Commander of the Faithful, in a campaign
So congratulate the Commander of the Faithful on a conquest
That rubbed your enemies' noses in the dust.
That chastened your enemies' skulls with pounding
تَرَكَتleft بلادَthe lands of الكُفرِunbelief مُظلمَةًdarkened بِماwith what
تَرَكَت بلادَ الكُفرِ مُظلمَةً بِما
أَجلَتit cleared away عَنِfrom الإِيمَانِfaith مِنof أظلامِdarkness
أَجلَت عَنِ الإِيمَانِ مِن أظلامِ
It left the lands of unbelief darkened with
It left the lands of unbelief darkened by what
The darkness it cleared away from faith.
It dispelled from them of the darkness of faithlessness
وَأسلَمand remain safe أمينَtrustee of اللهِGod تَصدَعُyou proclaim openly بِالهُدىwith guidance
وَأسلَم أمينَ اللهِ تَصدَعُ بِالهُدى
وَتَلِيand you deal with بِحَدِّwith the edge of السَّيفِthe sword كُلّevery عُرامِinsolence
وَتَلِي بِحَدِّ السَّيفِ كُلّ عُرامِ
And remain safe, God's trustee, proclaiming guidance,
And the trustee of God cries out with guidance
And deal with every insolence by the sword's edge.
And loosens every pillar of paganism with the sword's edge
وَإِذَاand when ابتدأتyou begin بِسَعدwith the felicity of جدّكyour fortune مَطلَباًa quest
وَإِذَا ابتدأت بِسَعد جدّك مَطلَباً
كَفَلَتguarantee لَكَfor you الأَقدَارُthe fates بِالإتمَامِof completion
كَفَلَت لَكَ الأَقدَارُ بِالإتمَامِ
And when, with your auspicious fortune, you begin a quest,
When it commences with the good fortune of your ancestor a request
The fates guarantee you its completion.
The destinies guarantee its completion
واخلُدand live forever لِحِفظِto preserve الِّينِthe faith [apparent typo] وَالدُّنيَاand the world مَعاًtogether
واخلُد لِحِفظِ الِّينِ وَالدُّنيَا مَعاً
فيin غِبطَةٍenviable happiness مَوصولَةٍjoined بِدَوَامِto eternity
في غِبطَةٍ مَوصولَةٍ بِدَوَامِ
And live forever to preserve faith and the world together,
And devote yourself to protecting calm and world together
In enviable bliss joined to eternity.
In bliss unceasingly attached to permanence
