She marveled at my attire when it grew threadbare,
She wondered at my dress when she saw me,
While she wore richly patterned, flowing cloth.
Wearing a robe embroidered and lined with silk.
هَذِهِyou there لاdo not تَعجَبِيmarvel منat هَذِهِthis
قَبلَهَاbefore it أُلبِسَwas clothed دُرٌّpearls صَدَفَاshells
You there, do not marvel at this:
Do not wonder, O maid, at this,
Before it, pearls were clothed in shells.
For before it was dressed in pearls and shells.
لاdo not تَظُنِّيthink الدَّهرَTime لِيof me مُستَلِباًa robber
إِنَّماonly جَرَّدَunsheathed مِنِّيfrom me مُرهَفَاa keen-edged blade
Do not think Time has robbed me;
Think not that time has robbed me,
It has only unsheathed a keen-edged blade from me.
But that it has stripped from me a splendid dress.
إنَّindeed ماءًmoisture كانwas فيin وَجنَتِهاher cheek
وَرَدَتهُdrank from it السِّنُّage حَتَّىuntil نشَفاit dried up
Indeed, the moisture once in her cheek—
The water that filled its sleeves
Age drank from it until it dried up.
Old age has dried up and it faded away.
وَذَوَىand withered العُنَّابُthe jujubes منfrom أَنمُلِهاher fingertips
فَأَعَادَتهُso turned it اللَّياليthe nights حَشَفاshriveled dates
And the jujubes of her fingertips withered,
The stalks have withered from her fingers,
So the nights turned them into shriveled dates.
But the nights will renew and restore it again.
