Ask the two guardians of beauty's garden

and the two polo mallets of that cheek-down:

who crowned the branch with the crescent

and made roses grow among the oxeye flowers?

    What daisies and pomegranate blossoms

hovered above the clouds' watering place?

And what two asps of cheek-down

crept like two lām letters in a book?

And what water, and what fire,

    did youth's luxuriance bring together?

Say: two serpents of a limpid spring,

which the mouth guards with blades.

And say: gardens; and say: pearls,

    refreshed with musk and wine.

Who will bring him to me, when hopes deceive?

    Drowsy-eyed, slender-waisted, guileless,

the blossom of his cheek shines

upon my heart, with none to help.

O my soul, union with you is

indispensable, and I have no defense.

For his eyelid has cried, “Come fight!”

So where is escape from his deadly assault?

O my heart, afflicted with love for him,

my eye [sold you] with nothing in return

to one who begrudges his nearness in love,

even to the phantom in sleep.

Be patient with his desertion and reproach:

for there is nothing but what you see.

    Perhaps some gentleness of union

will overcome the harshness of estrangement,

or something the nights bring forth

will free you from that captivity.

    And a well-wisher said, “O stranger,

you have gone too far in anguish and grief.

Each has his allotted share of tears,

but the soul has no price.”

Woe to you! No life is sweet,

    nor boon companion, nor solace.

So leave my eyes to stream—

    can tears find any repose?

And weep with me, in pity for my state,

as Ghaylan wept among the dwellings.

I made love's garb my inner garment,

and strutted in its new mantle.

    بالنفس أفديه مِن حبيب

    I have a beloved who assailed and wronged me;

with my life I ransom him—what a beloved!

When he passed by me, I sang in secret,

for fear of the listening watcher:

    “Muhammad al-Lanq, O my gazelle,

O you with the large eyes,

    you plucked my heart and did not care;

is this no shame to you, my beloved?”
