ياO أهلَpeople of تُدمِيرَTudmir إنَّindeed جَارَكُمُyour neighbor
صِيدَwas caught علىdespite مَاwhat تَرَونَyou see مِنof حَذَرِهhis wariness
O people of Tudmir, indeed your neighbor
O people of destruction, your neighbor
Has been caught, despite the wariness you see in him.
Is prey to whatever peril you see him in.
أسلَمَهُsurrendered him حُبُّهُhis love إِلَىto رَشَإِa young gazelle

His love surrendered him to a young gazelle
His love has surrendered him to the spears
Whose desires include tormenting a lover's heart.
That torment the heart of the lover wherever they turn.
يَهتَزُّhe sways فِيin بُردَتَيthe two mantles of ملاحتِهِhis beauty
كَمَاas يَميسُsways gracefully القَضِيبُthe bough فِيin بَهَرِهits splendor
He sways in the two mantles of his beauty,
He trembles in my mantle's folds
As a bough sways gracefully in its splendor.
As a rod quivers in the hand that holds it.
وكَانَand was شَوقِيmy longing إلَىfor تَحِيَّتِهِhis greeting
شَوقَthe longing of رِيَاضِgardens of الرُّبَىthe hills ِإلَىfor مَطَرِهits rain
And my longing for his greeting was
And my longing for his greeting
The longing of gardens on the hills for their rain.
Was the longing of gardens for the rain that nurtures them.
فَضَنَّso he was miserly حَتَّىeven بِهَاwith it فَوَاso, alas أسَفاًsorrow
قَدindeed عَادَhas returned صَفوُthe clarity of الهَوَىlove إِلَىto كَدَرِهits murk
So he withheld even that—oh, what sorrow!
But he was stingy even with that, what a pity!
Love's clarity has turned back to its murk.
The quintessence of passion has turned bitter.
يَاoh حَبَّذَاهُhow dear he is وَإِنeven if جَفَاhe spurned وَسَطَاand he assailed
I am content with him فِيin وِردِهِhis coming to water وَفِيand in صَدرِهhis departure from water
Oh, how dear he is, even if he spurns and assails me!
Yet blessed is he, though he spurned and forgot me,
I am content with him in his coming and his going.
I am content with him in his refusal and acceptance.

All I need of him is to see him, and
It satisfies me to see him and to
To walk in his footsteps whenever he walks.
Walk in his footsteps wherever they lead.
