يَخُصُّsingles out ذَراكَyour lofty abode ياO نَجلَson of الإِمَامِthe Imam
A greeting from the garden of peace
Greetings of peace from the garden of peace
Singles out your lofty abode, O son of the Imam.
Specifically for you, O son of the Imam
يَهُبُّwafts مَعَwith النَّوَاسِمِthe gentle breezes كُلّevery صُبحٍmorning
وَيَسرِيand travels by night بِالعَشِيِّin the evening مَعَwith الغَمامِthe clouds
It wafts with the gentle breezes every morning
It comes with the soft breezes every morn
And journeys at dusk with the clouds.
And flows at dusk with the clouds
إذَاwhen اعتَكَرَthickens الظلامُthe darkness عَلَيهِover it أَورَىkindles
زِنَادَthe flints of البَرقِlightning فيin غَسَقِdeep gloom الظّلامِthe darkness
When darkness thickens over it, it kindles
When darkness descends, it lights
The flints of lightning in the deep gloom of night,
The lightning flash in the gloom of darkness
لِيُخبِرَto tell عَنof فُؤَادٍa heart فيكَfor you صَبٍّenamored
عَمِيدٍlove-stricken مُنذُsince بَينِكyour departure مُستَهامِdistraught with love
To tell of a heart enamored of you,
To tell of a heart filled with love for you
Stricken since your departure, distraught with love;
A pillar since between us stood the trustee
وعَنand of عَهدٍa bond نَأىwent far away مَولاهُits lord عَنهُfrom it
فلاحَso wasted away القَلبُthe heart مِنهُbecause of it فِيin غَرَامِardent love
And of a bond whose lord has gone far from it,
And of a covenant whose lord has abandoned
So the heart wastes away for it in longing.
So the heart was inflamed with passion for him
تَمرُّtaste bitter لَهُto him المَطاعِمُfoods وَهيَand they are شَهدٌhoney
وَيضنَىand he wastes away بالشّرابِfrom drink وبالطّعامِand from food
Food tastes bitter to him, though it is honey,
Foods pass him by though they are sweet
And drink and food leave him wasted.
And he dislikes drinks and food
تَهَيّأreadied himself كَيto يَطيرَfly هَوىًout of love وَشَوقاًand longing
إِلَيكَtoward you فَعَأقَهُbut hindered him سُوقُlegs الحَمَامِthe doves
He readied himself to fly, out of love and longing,
He readied himself to fly in passion and longing
Toward you, but the doves' legs held him back.
To you, but the pace of the dove prevented him
وَلِيand I have زُغبٌdowny young كَزُغبlike the downy young of الطَّيرِbirds فُلّتwere blunted
بِهِنّby them شَباةُsharpness حَدِّيmy edge واعتِزَامِيand my resolve
And I have fledglings, like birds' fledglings; blunted
And I have a yearning like the yearning of birds
By them are my sharp edge and my resolve.
With it the youth of my limit and resolve
فإِنso if أَقصِرI fall short فمنthen from عَدَمlack of المُوَاليthe supporter
وإنand indeed السَّهمthe arrow بِالرِّيشwith the feathers اللُّؤامِclosely fitted
So if I fall short, it is for lack of a supporter;
If I fall short then 'tis from lack of loyalty
For an arrow depends on closely fitted feathers.
And if the arrow misses, blame the defective feather
وَمَنand whoever رَامَsought النُّهوضَrising بلاwithout جَنَاحٍa wing
كَمَنlike one who رَكِبَrode الجَموحَthe headstrong horse بلاwithout لِجَامِa bridle
And whoever seeks to rise without a wing
He who hopes to rise without wings
Is like one who rides a headstrong horse without a bridle.
Is like one who mounts a steed without reins
وَإنِّيand I indeed لاno غِنًىability to do without لِيfor me مِنfrom مَسيرٍa journey
يَبُذُّoutstrips إلَيكُمُtoward you رَتكَthe swift gait of النّعامِthe ostriches
And I cannot do without a journey
And I have no alternative but to journey
Toward you, outstripping the ostriches' swift gait.
To you slowly, like the gait of ostriches
فَعِزِّيso my honor فيin الوُفودِcoming as a visitor علىto ذَراكُمyour lofty abode
وذلّيand my abasement فيin الإِقامَةِremaining فِيin مُقَامِيmy dwelling
My honor lies in coming to your lofty abode,
My pride is in visiting your abode
And my abasement in remaining in my dwelling.
And my humility in staying in my place
ذَوَىwithered لِبِعَادِكُمbecause of your absence نَورُthe blossoms of القَوَافِيthe rhymes
وَجَفّand dried up لِبَنِكُمbecause of your parting (probable reading) مَاءُthe water of الكلامِspeech
The blossoms of rhyme have withered in your absence,
The light of poetry has dimmed in your absence
And the water of speech has dried up at your parting.
And the water of speech dried up without you
فَمَاso not تَحكِيconvey لَنَاto us الألفَاظُthe words مَعنَىmeaning
So words convey no meaning to us,
Words cannot convey meaning to us
Nor does poetry flow in ordered form.
Nor can verse flow into meter
لَقينَاwe encountered الدَّهرَthe age بَعدَكafter you أيَّwhat an دَهرٍage
وَهَذَاand this العَامُyear بَعدكَafter you أيُّwhat a عَامyear
Since you left, we have faced an age—what an age!
After you we met time, what time!
And this year since you left—what a year!
And this year without you, what a year!
بَعِيدٌdistant نَفعُهُits benefit دانٍnear أذَاهُits harm
ظَهيرٌan ally لِلّئامِfor the ignoble عَلَىagainst الكِرَامِthe noble
Its benefit distant, its harm close at hand,
Its benefit remote, harmful to the close
An ally of the ignoble against the noble.
An ally to villains against the noble
أخَافfrightened حِمَىthe sanctuary of بَلَنسِيَةٍValencia وَكَانَتand it once was
تَطِيرُfly بِهَاwithin it البُزاةthe hawks عَلَىagainst الحَمَامِthe doves
It has terrorized Valencia's sanctuary, though once
I fear the fever of Valencia which
Hawks swooped there upon the doves.
Used to make the heroes fly to the baths
وجالَتand ranged حَولَهاaround it خَيلُthe cavalry of النَّصَارَىthe Christians
وَكَانَتand it once was قَدalready حَماهَاhad protected it مِنكَfrom you حَامِa guardian
And the Christians' cavalry ranged around it,
And around it roamed the steeds of Christians
Though a guardian from you had once defended it.
Though you protected it from every defender
وَمَرّواand they passed آمِنينَsafe بِجَنبَتَيهَاalong both its sides
وَكَانُواand they once were يَرهبونَكَfearing you فِيin المَنَامِdreams
And they passed safely along both its sides,
And they passed secure by its sides
Though once they feared you in their dreams.
When they feared you in their dreams
وَمَاand not يُخشَىis feared العَرِينُthe lion's den بِغَيرِwithout لَيثٍa lion
وهَلand is ...? يُخشَىfeared القُرَابُthe scabbard بلاwithout حُسَامِa keen sword
And no den is feared without a lion;
Without a lion, the den is not feared
And is a scabbard feared without a keen sword?
Nor is the tomb feared without swords
وَكَانَتand it once was لاnot يُخَافُfeared الهَرجُbloodshed فِيهَاwithin it
كَأَنas though المَرءa person فِيin البَلَدِthe city الحَرَامِthe inviolable
And once no bloodshed was feared within it,
Wherein no chaos was feared
As though one were in the Sacred City.
As if one were in the holy land
فَأضحَتso it has become لاno حَيَاةَlife لِسَاكِنِيهَاfor its inhabitants
بِهَاthere إلاexcept حياةa life كالحِمامlike death
So now its inhabitants have no life
So it has no life left for its inhabitants
There, save a life that is like death.
Save a life like that of turtledoves
أسَيِّدَناO our lord أبَاAbu زَيدٍZayd رَضَعنَاwe suckled
ثُدِيthe breasts of البِرِّkindness وَالنِّعَمِand favors الجِسَامِimmense
O our lord Abu Zayd, we suckled
Our master Abu Zayd who suckled us
The breasts of kindness and immense favors.
The teat of righteousness and great bounties
فَصِرنَاso we became بَعدَafter رِحلَتِهِhis departure كُهولاًmiddle-aged men
أُعِيدَwas imposed again عَلَيهِمُupon them مُرُّthe bitterness of الفِطَامُweaning
So after his departure, we became middle-aged men
After his departure we grew into elders
Upon whom the bitterness of weaning was imposed anew.
Returned to the bitterness of weaning
سَمَاrose high وَحَمىand defended الثّغورَthe frontiers عَلَىagainst الأعَادِيthe enemies
رَعَاهُmay He guard him اللهُGod مِنas سَامٍone exalted وَحَامِand a protector
He rose high and guarded the frontiers against the foes;
Exalted, he protected the borders from enemies
May God watch over him—an exalted one and a protector!
May God protect him from poison and fever
فَيَاso O ابنَson of خليفَةِthe caliph of اللهِGod المُصَفَّىthe chosen
وَصِنوَand brother of إِمَامِنَاour Imam خَيرِthe best of الأنَامِhumankind
So, O son of God's chosen caliph,
O son of the caliph of God, the chosen one
And brother of our Imam, the best of humankind,
And grandson of our Imam, best of all men
لَكُمfor you عُرِفَwas known اقتِنَاءُacquiring المَجدِglory قِدماًlong ago
وَتَكشِيفُand dispelling المُلِمَّاتِcalamities العِظَامِmighty
You have long been known for acquiring glory,
Yours is the old purchase of glory
And dispelling mighty calamities,
And the unveiling of momentous calamities
وَرَفعُand raising المَعلُومَاتِwhat is known عَلَىupon رَوَاسٍfirm foundations
مُؤطّدَةٍsecurely established وَإيضاحُand clarifying المَعَامِيobscure matters
And raising what is known upon firm foundations,
And the raising of lofty flags
Securely set, and clarifying obscure matters.
Firmly planted and clarifying policies
وَمَاand not مَنone whose قَيسُQays عَيلانٍʿAylan أبُوهُhis father
And no man whose father is Qays ʿAylan
No son of Qays Aylan had his father
Falters in affairs or is blunt of edge.
Keen in matters and wise
لَعَلَّperhaps العَبدَthe servant يَغلَطُmay err فِيهِconcerning him وَقتٌa moment
فَيُسعِفُهُand so helps him بِإدرَاكِby attaining المَرَامشthe desired goal (probable reading)
Perhaps time will err in this servant's favor,
Perhaps the servant errs at times
And grant him the attainment of his desire,
So he helps him realize his hopes
وَيُنجِدُهُand aids him عَلَىagainst غَولِthe ghoul of الفَيَافِيthe desert wastes
بِصهوَةِon the back of وَاخِدٍa swift-striding camel سَلِسِpliant الزَّمَامthe rein
And aid him against the ghoul of the desert wastes,
And aids him against the injustice of deserts
On the back of a swift-striding camel, docile to the rein,
With the roar of a smooth-reined lion
لِيُبلِغَنِيso it may bring me استلامَkissing بَنانِthe fingertips of مَلكٍa king
تُقِرُّacknowledge بِفَضلِthe excellence of نِعمَتِهِhis bounty عِظَامِيmy bones
So it may bring me to kiss a king's fingertips,
To bring me the receipt of the construction of a royal palace
Whose gracious bounty my very bones acknowledge;
Wherein my bones may settle, thanks to his bounty
وَألثُمُand I kiss تُربَthe dust of نَعلَيهhis two sandals فأَقضِيthus I discharge
بِلَثمِby kissing تُرَابِهَاtheir dust بَعضَsome of الذِّمَامِthe obligations owed
And I may kiss the dust of his sandals, thus discharging
And I may kiss the dust of his shoes, and so
By kissing their dust, a part of the obligation I owe.
Fulfill some of my hopes with that dust
