غزل الكساء ترى من النساج من

The cloak's weaving can be seen from the weaver

غناؤك عندي يميت الطرب

Your singing kills my rapture

يا شقيقي ويا خليلي أباء

O my brother and my friend refused

يا معشر البصراء لا تتطرفوا

لعمرو أبيك ما نُسب المعلى

By your father's life, glory is not attributed

رأس من يدعي البلاغة مني

The head of whoever claims eloquence from me

رأيتك يا ابن أبي كامل

I saw you, O son of Abu Kamil

معترف فيها الدليل أنه

The evidence therein admits

هل القول إن أطنبت في القول نافع

Is prolonged speech useful to you, and is there in your conscience an intercessor for me?

إن أرم شامخا من العز

If I aspire to greatness and nobility

وصف الصد لمن أهوى فصد

He described the rejection of the one I love so I was rejected

ألمت بنا يوم الرحيل اختلاسة

The day of parting afflicted us stealthily,

قل ليحيى في غير عتب عليه

Tell Yahya, without reproach,

من تكن هذه السماء عليه

If this sky has blessed him

بيت جرى الماء فيه من أسافله

A house through which water flowed

بك الله حاط الدين وانتاش أهله

By God, He has established religion and you are its supporter

قد أطلنا بالباب أمس القعودا

We sat waiting by the door yesterday

بنفسي ومالي من طريف وتالد

With my soul and wealth from flow and birth,

رأيت أبا هفان يسال قعنبا

I saw Abu Haffan asking for wine

قل لوهب البغيض يا وخش

Say to Wahhab the hateful, O timid one

لأبي العيناء أولاد

For Abu al-Ayna first,

أبو جعفر كالناس يرضى ويغضب

Abu Ja'far is like people, pleased and angry

أتانا أبو العيناء بابن مزور

Abu Al-Ayna came to us with a pretender

رد إبنة القوم أو فاطلب لها ذكرا

Reply to the girl's folks or else make mention of her,

أكذبت أحسن ما يظن مؤملي

I denied the best of what my hopeful one thinks

وليلة عارض لا نوم فيها

On a night of passing rain, no sleep came

لا تصير شغلك اليوم

Do not make your work today

لي صديق في خلقة الشيطان

I have a friend with the nature of Satan

أقول لصاحبي وقد رأينا

I say to my companion when we saw

يا وزراء السلطان

O ministers of the sultan

يا ابن سعدان أجلح الرزق في

O son of Sa'dan, hasten to acquire sustenance in Umm

تعلم إن شر المال مال

Learn that ill-gotten wealth is evil

جزى الله عني آل خاقان إنهم

May God reward the Khans for me, they

رائدات الهوى سلبن فؤادي

The guides of passion robbed my heart

أبا جعفر إن الولاية إن تكن

O Abu Ja'far, if the authority glorifies a people, then you are its glory,

خبا مصباح عقل أبي علي

The lamp of my father Ali's mind has gone out

كم من فتى تحمد أخلاقه

How many a youth of exemplary morals,

لك عندي بشارة فاستمعها

I have good news for you, so listen,

أقمت ببابك في جفوة

I stood at your door in aloofness

أقول له والجوسق الفرد لائح

I say to him, and the lonely new moon is shining,

لقد قرع الواشي بأهون سعيه

The washer struck with his feeble hand

حجبت بباب أبي صالح

I barred at the door of Abi Salih

وتمتعت شبابي كله

I enjoyed all of my youth

أمست كشاحنة الدنيا بأجمعها

I have become like a van carrying the whole world

إذا ما شال شوال عكفنا

When Shawwal departs, we incline

فإني قد بلوتكم جميعا

For I have tested you all,

لئن كان يهديني الغلام لوجهتي

If the boy guides me on my road,

جئته زائرا فانزلني الخان

I came to him as a visitor, so he lodged me in an inn

أسكرتني سكرا بغير شراب

Intoxicated me without any drink

لنا كل يوم نوبة قد ننوبها

Each day we face hardship after hardship

مرفقة أعطيتها فردة

I gifted her a single earring,

مدحت الأمير الفتح أطلب عرفه

I praise the Prince Al-Fath, seeking his favor,

قد أتيناك للسلام فصادفنا

We came to you for peace, but found

ولابسة ثوبا من الخز أدكنا

Wearing a dress of dark satin

لواني بما وعد البحتري

My colours promised what al-Buhturi had promised

في كل يوم لي ببابك وقفة

Each day I pause at your door,

دولة ترغم الحسود وإن

A state that forces envy, though

ما بال قلبك لا يقر خفوقا

في كل يوم لي ببابك

لو تخيرت ما هويت ولو

أبلغ خليلي أبا بكر مغلغلة

ليس يرضى الحر الكريم ولو

إنما يخلو أبو العيناء

يا ابن سعد أن العقوبة لا

عجز الراكب البصير وأولى

مالي أرى أبوابهم مهجورة

قلت لأهلي وراموا أن أميرهم

سمعنا بأشعار الملوك فكلها

قد أتينا للوعد صدر النهار

أتيتك جذلان مستبشرا

أبلغ أبا العيناء أن لاقيته

واغنم الشكرانه كنزك الباقي

تندى أنامله إذا يبس الثرى
