1. I came to him as a visitor, so he lodged me in an inn
I suffered harm and the hatred of a companion
2. My drink was stale and foul, and my food
Was prepared for me in the marketplace
3. And my night's rest - what was it, O Abu
Yaqub, but discomfort, stench, and confinement
4. Thus we remained for twenty days
In mornings of harm and gloom
5. Then he gave a gift resembling
Deprivation - he did not give it with an open face
6. So I counted what I had gained, and it was
Half of what I had spent on my journey
