- أتاني الذي لا يقدر الناس قدرهNews reached me whose gravity people cannot fathom:
- إذا أديتني وحملت رحليIf you bring me to my destination and carry my saddle,
- أشاقتك ليلى في الخليط المجانبHas Layla stirred your longing among the companions who drew away?
- إنهم عند ربهم في جناتTruly, they are with their Lord amid gardens,
- إني تفرست فيك الخير أعرفهIndeed, I have discerned goodness in you, and I recognize it.
- بدا لي أني لست مدرك ما مضىIt has dawned on me that I cannot catch what has passed,
- بكت عيني وحق لها بكاهاMy eye wept, and rightly did it weep.
- تحمله الناقة الأدماء معتجراThe tawny she-camel bears him, his head wrapped in a mantle,
- تذكر بعدما شطت نجوداHe remembered Najud after she had gone far away,
- جلبنا الخيل من أجأ وسلمىWe brought the horses from Aja and Salma,
- جلبنا الخيل من أجأ وفرعWe brought the horses from Ajaʾ and Farʿ,
- خلف السلام على امرئ ودعتهMay peace remain upon a man I bade farewell to
- رحم الله نافع بن بديلMay God have mercy on Nāfiʿ ibn Budayl,
- رميناك أيام الفجار فلم تزلWe shot at you in the days of al-Fijār, yet you remained
- شهدت بإذن الله أن محمداI bore witness, by God's leave, that Muhammad
- شهدت بأن وعد الله حقI bore witness that God's promise is true,
- عدمت بنيتي إن لم تروهاMay I lose my little daughter if you do not see her,
- عند الصباح يحمد القوم السرىAt dawn, the people praise the night’s journey,
- فسرنا إليهم كافة في رحالهمSo we marched, all of us, to them in their encampments,
- فلم أر كالإسلام عزا لأمةSo I have seen no glory for a people like Islam,
- كذبت لقد أقمت بها ذليلاYou were wrong—you have stayed there in abasement;
- لعمري لقد حكت رحى الحرب بعدماBy my life, war’s millstone has indeed ground down—after
- لقد ذاق حسان الذي هو أهلهḤassān has indeed tasted what he deserved,
- لكنني أسأل الرحمن مغفرةBut I ask the Most Merciful for forgiveness,
- لما رأيت بني عوف وإخوتهمWhen I saw the sons of ‘Awf and their brothers—
- لو لم تكن فيه آيات مبينةIf there were no clear signs in him,
- وعدنا أبا سفيان بدرا فلم نجدWe pledged to meet Abu Sufyan at Badr, but did not find
- وفينا رسول الله يتلو كتابهAnd among us is the Messenger of God, reciting His Book,
- يا رسول المليك إن لسانيO Messenger of the Sovereign, truly this tongue of mine
- يا قيس أنتم شرار قومكمO Qays, you are the worst of your people,
