News reached me whose gravity people cannot fathom:

of mistreatment and sin against Zaynab among them.

And in her removal, Muhammad was not disgraced

on a battlefield; and between us lies Manshim's perfume.

And Abu Sufyan has ended up, through his alliance with Damdam,

and through our war, with his nose in the dust and in remorse.

We bound together his son Amr and the retainer of his right hand

with a tightly wrought chain of stout, clanking rings.

So I swore: battalions from among us shall never cease,

the elite of an army, amid a vast host marked with insignia,

stripping Quraysh of unbelief until we strike her again

with a nose-crushing blow above the noses, with a branding iron.

We make them alight in the outskirts of Najd and Nakhla,

and if they enter Tihama, we enter too, with cavalry and infantry,

for all time, until our path is no longer bent aside,

and send them in the footsteps of Ad and Jurhum.

And a people who did not obey Muhammad will regret

their conduct—but what a time for regret!

So tell Abu Sufyan, if you meet him:

if indeed you do not make your prostration sincere and embrace Islam,

then rejoice in swift disgrace in this life,

and a shirt of pitch as you dwell forever in Hell.
