إِذاif أَدَّيتِنيyou deliver me وَحَمَلتِand you carry رَحليmy saddle
مَسيرَةَa journey of أَربَعٍfour بَعدَbeyond الحِساءِal-Hisā’
If you bring me to my destination and carry my saddle,
When you lead me and carry my belongings
a four-night journey beyond al-Hisā’,
On a journey of four miles after supper
فَشَأنُكِthen go your way أَنعُمٌAn‘um وَخَلاكِand has left you ذَمٌّblame
وَلاand not أَرجِعI return إِلىto أَهليmy family وَرائيbehind me
then go your way, An‘um; you are free of blame.
Your treatment of me is most kind, while to abandon me would be blameworthy,
And I shall not return to my family behind me;
And I shall not return to my family behind me.
وَجاءَand came المُسلِمونَthe Muslims وَغادَرونيand they left me

and the Muslims will come back and leave me
The Muslims came and left me
in the land of al-Shām, longing to remain.
In the land of Syria, longing for rest,
وَرَدَّكِand returned you كُلُّevery ذيone with نَسَبٍkinship قَريبٍclose
إِلىto الرَحمَنِthe All-Merciful مُنقَطِعَsevered الإِخاءِbrotherhood
And every close kinsman will return you
While every close relative has denied me
to the All-Merciful, with the bonds of brotherhood severed.
Before the Merciful, severing all brotherhood.

There I shall not care for the blossoms of unirrigated palms,
There I shall not care if Sirius appears,
nor for date palms whose bases are well-watered.
Nor for palms whose bases are irrigated.
