We pledged to meet Abu Sufyan at Badr, but did not find
any truth in his promise; he did not keep his word.
فَأُقسِمُso I swear لَوif وافَيتَناyou had come to us فَلَقيتَناand then met us
لَأُبتَyou would surely have returned ذَميماًdisgraced وَاِفتَقَدتَand you would have lost المَوالِياthe allies
So I swear: had you come to us and met us,
you would have returned disgraced and lost your allies.
تَرَكناwe left بِهِat it (Badr) أَوصالَlimbs of عُتبَةَUtbah وَاِبنَهُand his son

There we left the limbs of Utbah and his son,
and Amr, Abu Jahl—we left him lying dead.

You disobeyed the Messenger of God—fie upon your religion
and your evil course, which was misguided.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I وَإِنand even if عَنَّفتُمونيyou rebuke me لَقائِلٌsurely saying

For I, even if you rebuke me, will surely say:
May my family and my wealth be a ransom for the Messenger of God.
أَطَعناهُwe obeyed him لَمdid not نَعدِلهُwe equate him فيناamong us بِغَيرِهِwith anyone other than him
شِهاباًa blazing star لَناfor us فيin ظُلمَةِthe darkness of اللَيلِthe night هادِياguiding
We obeyed him; among us, we held none his equal—
a blazing star guiding us in the darkness of night.
