لَقَد ذاقَ حَسّانُ الَّذي هُوَ أَهلُهُ

وَحَمنَةُ إِذ قالوا هَجيراً وَمِسطَحُ
Ḥassān has indeed tasted what he deserved,
Hassan has indeed tasted what he deserved,
Hassan, who deserved it, truly tasted
as did Ḥamna and Misṭaḥ, when they uttered foul speech.
And Hamna and Mistah too, when they uttered foul speech.
The pain, when they said outrageous, vile things.

وَسَخطَةَ ذي العَرشِ الكَريمِ فَأُترِحوا
They assailed their Prophet’s wife with conjectures about the unseen,
They assailed their prophet’s wife with blind conjecture,
They dared throw stones at their prophet’s wife,
and earned the wrath of the noble Lord of the Throne, and so were plunged into grief.
And incurred the wrath of the Lord of the noble Throne, so they were brought to grief.
Inciting the wrath of the noble Throne on high.
وَآذَواand they harmed رَسولَthe Messenger of اللَهِGod فيهاconcerning her فَجُلِّلواso they were cloaked

مَخازِيَ تَبقى عُمِّموها وَفُضِّحوا
They harmed the Messenger of God through that affair, and were engulfed
And they harmed God’s Messenger over her, so they were cloaked
They hurt God’s messenger - may they be shamed!
in lasting disgraces; they were turbaned with them and exposed.
In disgraces that endure, wound round their heads like turbans; and they were publicly shamed.
Disgraced, their shameful deeds spread far and wide.

شَآبيبُ قَطرٍ مِن ذُرا المُزنِ تَسفَحُ
And cutting verses were poured down upon them as though they were
And tightly twisted whips poured down upon them, as though they were
Their crops were destroyed, as if a downpour
torrents of rain streaming from the cloudbanks’ heights.
Bursts of rain spilling from the crests of the rain clouds.
Of sparks from flint was raining from the skies.
