Has Layla stirred your longing among the companions who drew away?

Yes, for the spray of tears in my breast overwhelms me.

He wept after one whose destination lay far away, who would not stop

For the need of a grieving, weary man who lamented love.

From early morning until the sun declined,

And every straying care of his returned to him.

Consider, for love clings to one who turns away,

As it long has, when a beloved does not dwell nearby.

I clothed my saddle-frames with a sturdy she-camel, then drove her on.

She trots along exhausting, well-beaten tracks.

She races mounts that keep wary watch with their eyes,

Fearing the whip's stroke, with sunken brows.

When a people's ancestral honors are altered, you find us

Generous in that regard, and of noble stock.

We defend our ancestral honors with our inherited wealth,

For one in need, or an eager seeker of his right.

And a blind man our wisdom guided to the path,

And a quarrelsome foe we set straight after he persisted obstinately.

And a cramped battlefield, where you see death in its midst—

We advanced toward it with the gait of untamed camels,

With silent warriors—you see fine mail over their skins,

And bright, spotless swords, like the stars in hue.

For they are fearless beneath their armor, as though they were

Lions that exchange blows whenever swords are drawn.

Their strongholds on every day of battle

Are steadfastness and keen swords of renowned make.

You boasted of a host that visited you in your dwellings.

It pressed deep until they were resisted with knuckles.

It overran fortresses, then pressed onward, seeking

The likely whereabouts of a fleeing clan among Qurayzah.
