جَلَبناwe brought الخَيلَthe horses مِنfrom أَجَأٍAjaʾ وَفَرعٍand Farʿ
تُغَرُّare stuffed مِنَwith الحَشيشِthe grass لَهاfor them العُكومُthe packs
We brought the horses from Ajaʾ and Farʿ,
We brought the horses from the rugged valleys
The packs stuffed with grass for them.
Grass tempts them there, the meadows allure them
حَذَوناهاwe shod them مِنَof الصَوّانِthe flint سِبتاًtanned-leather soles
أَزَلَّsmooth كَأَنَّas though صَفحَتَهُits surface أَديمُleather
We shod them with soles of flint,
We guided them down from the plateau for seven nights
Smooth, as though its surface were leather.
Smooth as if its surface was made of leather
أَقامَتthey stayed لَيلَتَينِtwo nights عَلىat مُعانٍMuʿān
فَأُعقِبَthen was made to follow بَعدَafter فَترَتِهاtheir weariness جُمومُrenewed vigor
They stayed two nights at Muʿān,
They stayed for two nights in the valley of Mu'an
Then renewed vigor followed their weariness.
Then clouds followed the pause that came after
فَرُحناthen we set out وَالجِيادُand the steeds مُسَوَّماتٌmarked
تَنَفَّسُbreathes فيin مَناخِرِهاtheir nostrils السَمومُthe scorching wind
Then we set out with marked steeds,
We rejoiced, the steeds were branded
The scorching wind breathing in their nostrils.
Breathed out poison through their nostrils
فَلاso, nay وَأَبيby my father مَآبُMaʾāb لَنَأتِيَنهاwe shall surely reach it
وَإِنand even if كانَتwere بِهاin it عَرَبٌArabs وَرومُand Romans
Nay, by my father, we shall surely reach Maʾāb,
No, by my refuge they will come for her
Even if Arabs and Romans are there.
Though around are Arabs and Romans
فَعَبَّأناso we readied أعِنَّتَهاtheir reins فَجاءَتthen they came
عَوابِسَfrowning وَالغُبارُand the dust لَهاfor them بَريمُa two-colored twisted cord
So we readied their reins, and on they came,
We loaded their gear, and they came
Frowning, with dust a two-colored cord about them,
Glowering, their dust to them a cloak
بِذيwith one possessing لَجَبٍclamor كَأَنَّas though البَيضَthe helmets فيهِwithin it
إِذاwhen بَرَزَتappeared قَوانِسُهاtheir crests النُجومُthe stars
With a clamorous host, as though the helmets within it,
With smooth flanks, as if whiteness lies in them
When their crests appeared, were stars.
When their lanterns, the stars, shine forth
فَراضِيَةُso a contented woman المَعيشَةِlife طَلَّقَتهاdivorced her
أَسِنَّتُهاtheir spearheads فَتَنكِحُthen she marries أَوor تَئيمُremains husbandless
So a woman content with life was divorced
Satisfied with life, they roam freely
By their spearheads; she may marry or remain widowed.
Their tongues marry or spurn as they wish
