سبع جوزات وتينه

أسمج الناس جميعا كلهم

All people are fools, every single one,

أهل جود ونائل ومنال

People of generosity and attainment

الجود أفلسهم وأذهب مالهم

Marwan's beard exudes pure ambergris

صلابة الوجه سلاح الفتى

قال لي الناس زر سعيد بن سلم

وليس على باب ابن إدريس حاجب

الصدق في أفواههم علقم

Sincerity in their mouths is bitter

رحل المطي إليك طلاب الندى

وإذا تجنن الشاعر أو مفحم

الطريق الطريق جاءكم الأحمق

ما كان مندق اللواء لطيره

ومحتجب والناس لا يعرفونه

أتراني أرى من الدهر يوما

قد مررنا بمالك فوجدناه

أنا بالأهواز جار لعمر لعظيم

كنت الممزق مرة

وهذا جميل على بغلة

لما سألتك شيئا

ما أراني إلا سأترك بغداد

برزت من المنازل القباب

إذا حججت بمال أصله دنس

ولقد قلت حين أقفر بيتي

عجبت لحراقة بن الحسين

نزل الفأر ببيتي

ولقد قلت حين أجحرني البرد

ألا رب برغوث تركت مجندلا

إن رياح اللؤم من شحمه

أنا في حال تعالى الله

أنا بالأهواز جار لعمر

ليس إغلاقي لبابي أن لي

شرابك في السحاب إذا عطشنا

ما لي أراك بخيلا

الخبز يبطي حين يدعي به

أنا مِن زوارِ بيتي
