واقفر منها الجو جو قراقر

Empty skies and barren dunes

كأن رجال التغلبيين خلفها

As if behind her were the conquering men -

فخيبة من يغير على غني

So the vision fails him who tries to change fate

نجا سلامة والرماح شواجر

They escaped unharmed, though speared by many a lance -

نصول بكل أبيض مشرفي

The whitest garment drapes

فأقسم لا يفارقني دوول

I swear it never leaves me, my sword

ولما دعاني الخبيري أجبته

When the expert swordsman challenged me

ألم أخبركما خبرا أتاني

Did I not bring you news that came to me

إنا لنكثر في قيس وقائعنا

We often recount in Qais and Tameem

وأسمر مرفوع يرى ما أربته

A dark one erected sees what I aimed him

وقالوا عامر سارت إليكم

They said Amer journeyed to you

فلا شربا إلا بلزن مصرد

So drink not but from a youth-wielded goblet,

هيهات هيهات بريات الكلل

ألا هل أتى غوثا ومازن أنني

فليت أبا شريح جار عمرو

سائل فوارس يربوع بشدتنا

I asked the horsemen at Rabu'a about our severity

قضت ثعل دينا ودنا بمثلة

A fox paid off a debt and weighed

إني أرى في عامر ذو ترون

I see in Prosperous one with freshness

بأبيض من أبكار مزن سحابة

With white more radiant than the virgin bright of Muzain's morn,

وفر من الحرب العوان ولم يكن

He fled from war though no coward was Hatem,

أمرتحل صحبي المشارق غدوة

A traveler, my companions left at dawn

ليس أخو الحرب العوان بمن نأى

Not every faint-hearted man who stands aloof,

ألا ودعت جيرانها أم أسودا

Alas, she bid her neighbors farewell, the dark cliffs,

لا ربوها مما يخاف ولا

She walks not with the rider she fears,

وزرق كستهن الأسنة هبوة

Their blue gowns billowed

سلكت مجامع الأوصال منه

I traveled the joints of appendages of him

أغشاكم عمرو عيوبا كثيرة

Amro concealed in you many faults

عفا من آل فاطمة السليل

The noble descendant of Fatima's family has pardoned

يا نصر نصر بني قعين إنما

O Nasr, Nasr of the tribe of Qa'in

أقاتل حتى لا أرى لي مقاتلا

تذكر وطبه لما رآني

هلا سألت بني نبهان ما حسبي

عفت أبضة من أهلها فالأجاول

صبحن الخيل مرة مسنفات

أقول لعبدي جرول إذ أسرته

ألا هل أتاها والأحاديث جمة

أنضخت بآطام المدينة أربعا

ونحن الجالبون سباء عبس

رأتني كأشلاء اللجام ولن ترى

ألا أبلغ الأقياس قيس بن نوفل

بني عامر هل تعرفون إذا غدا

كأن شريحا خر من مشمخرة

كأن نعام الدو باض عليهم
