- إني نظرت إلى المرآة إذ جليتIndeed, I looked into the mirror when it was polished,
- أهلا بزهر اللازورد ومرحباWelcome, lapis-lazuli blossom, welcome!
- تأمل بفضلك يا واقفاًReflect, in your kindness, O you who stand here,
- جنت مقل الغزلانThe gazelles' eyes have wrought
- حسب الخليع ملجاEnough for the libertine as a refuge:
- حيلة البرء صنعة لعليلThe means of healing is a craft for an ailing man
- رمت كبدي أخت السماك فأقصدتThe sister of al-Simāk shot at my liver and dealt a mortal blow.
- سدلن ظلام الشعورThey let fall the darkness of their hair
- عبرة تسيلTears streaming down
- قلب مدله وفي الضلوع حريقA love-distraught heart, and a fire within the ribs.
- كل له هواك يطيبEach one finds love of you sweet—
- لأتبعن الهوىI will pursue desire
- لله ما صنع الغرام بقلبهGod! What passion has done to his heart!
- ما العيد في حلة وطاقEid is not in fine attire and a shawl,
- ما للموله من سكره لا يفيقWhat ails the love-bewildered one, that he does not sober from his drunkenness?
- مد الخليجThe gulf swelled,
- مغنى خصيب وباب مرتج أبداًA lush retreat, and a door forever bolted;
- نبه الصبح رقدة النائمDawn has roused the sleeper from slumber;
- هل للعزا فيك سبيلIs there any path to solace for losing you?
- هل ينفع الوجد أو يفيدDoes passionate longing avail or bring benefit?
- ولي واحد مثل فرخ القطاAnd I have one child, like a sandgrouse chick,
- وموسدين على الأكف خدودهمAnd those resting their cheeks upon their palms—
- يا من يذكرني بعهد أحبتيO you who remind me of my days with my loved ones,
