Enough for the libertine as a refuge:

    A garden beside a pool,

    And wine passed round,

    Its breaths are fragrance.

Golden, a daughter of a wine jar,

    It rises with radiance;

    Every gloom splits open

    Before it and breaks apart.

    Its ewer sings,

    And the cup listens.

And it is ever hoped for

    Against dreadful misfortune,

Against sorrow, should it be stirred

Within the breast by a radiant one.

    Are the cups a solace

    For one beset by anxieties?

    O peerless one in beauty,

    After Ibn Rahil,

    فَاِحفَظ وَسائِلي

    This separation is permitted;

So keep my entreaties in mind.

The sorrowful one has no escape

When he spends the night with a companion:

A heart that stokes its fire

    Amid tears that boil.

    I have inclined utterly

    Toward youthful passion.

    Woe—and what woe—

To everyone who falls in love!

My night has proved too hard for me,

    Eastward and westward.

    Stars are driven onward,

    Crawling alongside the broken-limbed.

    So they move in circles,

And the night is like a captive.

    مِن طَرفِهِ الكَحيل

    A king who has troops

    From his kohl-dark gaze;

    His glances roam

    Through these minds.

    And his cool saliva,

    And his smooth cheek:

    Wine bearing well-spaced teeth,

    Like pearls upon throats,

    And a pomegranate flower's bloom

    Amid a fresh lily.

When you went away from me,

And I spent the night grief-stricken,

    I soothed with wishes

    A solitary heart.

And when you drew near me,

    I began to chant:

Glad tidings to everyone who has come

With news of the vizier's arrival:

That he be given, as a reward for good news,

What the bearer of glad tidings is given.
