What ails the love-bewildered one, that he does not sober from his drunkenness?

    Oh, how drunk he is,

without wine! Alas for the sorrowful, yearning one,

    who laments his homelands.

When from the fragrant breeze was drawn

    the musk of Darin,

and when the beauty of the delightful place almost

    brought us to life.

A river shaded by lovely spreading trees above it,

    their branches leafy.

And the water flows, with some afloat and some drowned

from the harvest of fragrant herbs.

Or can a cultivated man revive for us, with plantings,

    what once was so sweet?

    فَاِسقِني وَاِملا

    With me are the beloved and the clear cups;

so give me drink, and fill them!

A life grown sweet, and a pleasure garden like a bride

    when she is unveiled.

A life of which, perhaps, a portion will return,

    as it once was.

A tangle of thoughts, urged onward and driven

    by these melodies.

O my two friends, how long will you reproach me?

Both of you, desist a little!

I have died while living, and one afflicted by beauties

    is dead while alive.

The one of sweet dusky lips and charms has wronged me,

    fragrant in scent:

a crescent moon in every part, a human gazelle surpassing

    all other gazelles.

    a radiance that adorns him.

A maiden unlike any other says, singing,

    while she is drunk:

Yes, O God, he loves me, and I am in love,

    and we are children.

By God, we do not know—let each one be with a companion—

what will happen, if anything does.
