They let fall the darkness of their hair

    Upon faces like full moons.

    They unveiled, and dawn shone.

    They swayed their spear-like figures.

They laughed with the smile of daisies.

As though what lay upon their throats

Was what they had chosen their teeth from.

    Ask a sorcerer's two eyes

    About magic and the magician,

    And about a bewildered gaze

That feathers the arrows of languor

And shoots at the hidden depths of hearts.

Indeed, I fell madly in love with her—woe is me!

And my heart was humbled before her.

    Indeed, by love, she

Is surely a skittish gazelle of the thicket,

Over whom the curtained chambers are jealous.

    I was denied sweet slumber.

I lay awake, and all mankind slept.

    I wonder—would that I knew—I wonder:

Are the hours of my night months,

Or does night revolve around me?

You have won a sorrowful lover:

    So misery, sweetness, and injustice—

And go to excess: your servant is patient.
