    فَاِنتَبه لِلصبوح

    Dawn has roused the sleeper from slumber;

so wake for the morning draught.

And pass around a wine of distinction,

    whose fragrance wafts abroad.

O fire of the cups, may it never run dry

    of you—the generous man's land.

    And blessings be yours whenever

    the vine leaves intertwine.

And by my life, how fine is what gathers

    around the drinking companion's fingertips!

Bring it before the reproacher's morning call

    and the adviser's evening return.

And know that the reproacher is a devil,

going out at morning and returning at evening.

O brother, I have cast aside my authority,

and imagined the bridle [wording unclear].

My ribs and my eyelids are only

    between water and fire.

    رَبِّ أَينَ الفِرار

    My Lord, passion has taken hold of me;

    my Lord, where is escape?

In short, I am mad with love

    for a lovely gazelle.

So leave the reproachers—may they be no more!

    Indeed, my love is true.
