مَغنىًan abode خَصيبٌlush وَبابٌand a door مُرتَجٌshut أَبَداًforever
وَالدنُّand the wine jar وَالزِقُّand the wineskin وَالإِبريقُand the ewer وَالطاسُand the drinking bowl
A lush retreat, and a door forever bolted;
A lush abode and a door forever shut,
And the wine jar, the wineskin, the ewer, and the bowl.
And the wine jar, the wineskin, the ewer, and the drinking bowl.
هذيthis الخَلاعَةُrevelry لاnot شَيءَa thing سَمِعتyou have heard بِهِof it
فَاِستَغنِمso seize اللَهوَpleasure إِنَّindeed العُمرَlife أَنفاسُbreaths
This is abandon—no mere thing I have heard tell of.
This is revelry—not something you have merely heard of.
So seize your fill of pleasure: life is but breaths.
So seize pleasure, for life is only breaths.

I have a beloved, lovely in his coyness, full of languid charm,
And I have a beloved, charming in coyness, full of coquetry,
Sweet in his ways—there is no harm in kissing him.
Sweet in his ways, with no harm in kissing him.
فَإِنso if تَعَذَّرَhe proves unattainable أَوor عَزَّتُprove difficult مَطالِبُهُhis demands
فَالكَأسُthen the cup وَالكيسُand the purse وسواسٌa whisperer وَخَنّاسُand a skulker
If he proves inaccessible, or his favors are hard to win,
So if he proves unattainable, or his demands are hard to meet,
Then the cup is the Whisperer, and the purse the Slinker.
Then the cup and the purse are a whisperer and a skulker.
