A love-distraught heart, and a fire within the ribs.

Alas for it—would that it had never been!

It melts my patience, while ceaselessly are shed

    the tears of the eyelids.

O sister of al-Simak, my longing for you is intense.

    Ah, for my heart!

    الهَوى حَسبي

    As for my love for you, it is steadfast and grows;

    love is enough for me.

Because of your absence, I am a martyr there—

    on love's battlefield.

O you whom a group has led astray from what is right,

    their words are slander.

Yet you do not know that the reproacher deserves

    to be forsaken by you.

A wounded heart, and in the heart are wounds

    that bleed forever.

And you who turn away—how long will you keep

    my body sick?

And O sincere adviser, the reproached one has offered you

    a deaf ear.

You have prolonged your reproach of him, yet I do not think you can

    turn him from his pursuit.

And what an outrage to reproach one consumed by longing—

    his excuse is already clear!

Thus I melt away, and burning longing still

    wastes my body.

The physician fled from my illness, saying:

“How far beyond me it is!”

And I have a beloved, indifferent to union, a miser,

    full of suspicion.

If I seek union with him, he says, “You are a friend

who failed to keep the secret.”

If my secret has come out, I indeed deserve this,

and a public declaration has appeared.

O you, beside whom the beauty of the fair ones

    is paltry whenever they preen,

and you for whom battle with the lords

is easy when you encounter it,

and you to whom I complain of love,

yet you are unjust—God is enough for me!

O finest of all, in you beauty

is exquisite, and youth is luxuriant.

By my life, for your eyes I

    surpass Ghaylan in love.

O you who prolong your aversion—enough!

    Listen to me.

And O reproacher, do you not control your mouth?

    Leave me alone.

And O miser, will you not offer your dark lips

    with a benefactor's generosity?

Kiss me once, and pass along a path away from me,

    you drowsy fawn.

Oh, would that I knew! Following close on my path

is the dusky one among gazelles.
