The gazelles' eyes have wrought
The gardens of gentle gazelles,
the ravages of wine
My paradise of inclusion,

جيلاًa generation بَعدَafter جيلa generation
upon the world of humankind,
Upon the world of mankind,
generation after generation.
Generation after generation.
I am mad with love بِمَنwith one whom يطغيهِmakes him arrogant
عَلىtoward me (apparently عليّ) الجَمالbeauty
I am mad with love for one made arrogant
I obsess over he who would overpower me,
toward me by beauty.
Over beauty,
أُداريهِI humor him أَستَرضيهI seek to please him
فَيَأبىbut refuses الدَلالcoyness
I humor him, I seek to please him,
I cajole him, try to please him,
but coyness refuses.
But desire refuses compliance.
لَقَدindeed عَذَلونيthey blamed me فيهِover him
وَقالواand they said وَقالواand they said
Indeed, they have blamed me for him,
They have certainly blamed me for it,
and talked and talked,
And said, and said,
عَلىat حينِa time when قَدalready أَلهانيhad distracted me
عَنfrom قالَhe said وَقيلand it was said
just when I had been distracted
While it has distracted me
from gossip and hearsay
From saying and hearing.
لَيلُthe night of الصَدِّrejection وَالهِجرانand estrangement
وَيَومُand the day of الرَحيلdeparture
by the night of rejection and estrangement
The night of aloofness and estrangement,
and the day of departure.
And the day of departure,
إِلىuntil كَمhow long أُداريI appease اللُوّامthe faultfinders
مَثنىin pairs وَفُرادىand singly
How long must I appease the faultfinders,
To how much longer will I appease the blamers,
in pairs and singly?
In pairs and individually?
وَتَاللَهِand by God أخرىthe last of الأَيّامthe days
لاnot أُعطيI yield قِياداthe reins
And by God, to the end of my days,
By God, the days to come,
I will not yield the reins.
I will not give any lead.
لَهفيalas for me صِرتI have become بَينَamong الأَقوامthe people
حَديثاًa tale مُعاداrepeated
Alas, among the people I have become
My longing, I have become, among the people,
a tale told again and again.
A repeated topic of condemnation,
وَقَدand indeed قَعَدتhave lain in wait أَشجانيmy sorrows
And my sorrows have lain in wait
And my sorrows have settled
along every path.
In every path.
وَلاand no عَهدَacquaintance بِالسلوانwith forgetting love
وَلاnor يَنبَغيis fitting ليfor me
And I know nothing of forgetting love,
I am unaccustomed to comfort,
nor is it fitting for me.
Nor is it fitting for me.
هُوَhe الحُسنُbeauty لاnot أَختارُI choose
مَطلوباًan object of desire عَلَيهِover him
He is beauty itself; I would not choose
It is beauty, I do not choose
any beloved over him.
A desired one over it,
وَجهٌa face تُشرِقُshine الأَنوارُthe lights
عَلىupon صَفحَتَيهِits two cheeks
A face where lights shine
A face from which lights shine,
upon its two cheeks,
Upon its cheeks,
وَتَستَبِقُand race one another الأَبصارthe gazes
إِلَيهِtoward him إِلَيهِtoward him
and gazes race one another
And eyes compete
toward him, toward him.
Towards it, towards it.
وَقَدand a figure كَغُصنِlike a bough of البانِthe ban tree
فيin حقفٍa curved sand dune مَهيلloosely heaped
And a figure like a ban-tree bough
It is like a moist branch
in a dune of loose sand.
In an inclined meadow.
فَذاكَso that is الَّذيthe one whom يَلحانيreproaches me
عَلَيهِover him عَذوليmy faultfinder
So that is the one for whom I am reproached
That is what obsesses me,
by my faultfinder.
My crazed passion for it.

O son of al-Nasir al-Mansur,
Oh son of Al-Nasir Al-Mansur,
O son of all glory,
The son of all glory combined,

you are safety for the frightened
You are safety for the terrified,
from what he anticipates.
From what is feared.

So many gallant, delighted ones

Say and hear:

"Abu Hafs, he is my sultan,
May God preserve him for me!
God protect me for him."

He made me secure; he enriched me.
"He secured me, he enriched me,
He fulfilled my desire.
He fulfilled my wishes."
