Each one finds love of you sweet—
Everyone finds loving you sweet—
I, my reproacher, and the watchful guard.
I, my reproacher, and the watcher.

As for me, I am wherever you wish:
As for me, I am wherever you wish—
estrangement, heartache, and suffering.
Estrangement, burning grief, and suffering.
ياO وَيلَتاهalas for me مِمّاbecause of what أَساءُdid harm
قَتَلتَنيyou killed me وَأَنتَand you الطَبيبُthe physician
Oh, woe is me for all the hurt I suffer!
Alas for me, at the harm done!
You have killed me, though you are the healer.
You killed me, though you are the physician.
فَأَنتَso you ليto me عَدُوٌّan enemy حَبيبُbeloved

لِلَّهِto God (exclamation) عَيشيmy life ماhow أَمَرّاbitter
Thus you are to me an enemy—and beloved.
So you are to me a beloved enemy.
By God, how bitter my life is!
God, how bitter my life is!

I have suffered, in secret and in the open.
I have indeed suffered, in secret and openly.
My tears flowed until they became a sea,
My tears flowed and became a sea,

while a blaze lodged deep within my ribs.
And a flame lodged within my ribs.
They melted in its heat, and still it melts them.
They melted in its heat, and make me melt.

Against your eyes I have no means of escape,
I have no defense against your two eyes,
nor any path to your favor.
Nor any path to your favor.

O you who changes what he says,
O you who change what you say,
I lament our separation though you are near—
I lament separation, though you are near.

A strange affair, as you see!
Neither my reproacher nor my watcher knew
My reproacher and my watcher did not know

that love is the least of my sins.
That love is the lightest of my sins.
And you, O torment of hearts—
And you, O torment of hearts—

how many hearts complain to you,
How often hearts complain to you,
while you turn away and do not answer!
Yet you turn away and do not answer!

She said, “Sumāk, you are fickle.”
Samak said, 'You are fickle.'
I said, “It is your love that is unattainable.”
I replied, 'It is your love that changes.'

God punishes him or rewards him.
