وَمُوسِّدينَand those pillowing عَلىupon الأَكُفِّthe palms خُدودَهمtheir cheeks
قَدalready غالَهُمovertook them نَومُsleep الصَباحِof the morning وَغالنيand overtook me
And those resting their cheeks upon their palms—
Leaning their cheeks upon their palms
Morning sleep has overtaken them, and overtaken me.
Morning sleep had overcome them and overcome me
ماnot زِلتُI ceased أَسقيهِمI give them drink وَأَشرَبُand I drink فَضلَهمtheir leavings
حَتّىuntil سَكِرتُI became drunk وَنالَهُمand befell them ماwhat نالَنيbefell me
I kept serving them wine and drinking what they left,
I kept giving them drink and serving their remains
Until I became drunk, and what befell me befell them.
Until I became drunk and the same fate befell them
وَالخَمرُand wine تَعلَمُknows كَيفَhow تَطلُبُseeks ثَأرَهاits revenge
إِنّيindeed I أَمَلتُI tilted إِناءَهاits vessel فَأَمالَنيso it tilted me
And wine knows how to seek its revenge:
And wine knows how to take its revenge
Indeed, I tilted its vessel, so it tilted me.
I tilted its cup so it made me tilt
