- كم من أب لي قد ورثت فعالهMany a forefather's deeds have I inherited—
- لحرب شمرت بلوى قديسIndeed, a war raging at the sand-bend of Qudays
- لقينا بالفراض جموع رومAt al-Firad we met hosts of Romans
- لم تعرف الخيل العراب سواءناThe purebred Arabian horses knew none but us,
- من مبلغ عني القبائل مالكاًWho will carry my message to the tribes—to Mālik?
- منعتك من قرني قباذ وليتنيI shielded you from Qabadh’s two horns; would that I

- وافلتهن المسحلان وقد رأىAnd al-Musḥalān escaped them, having seen
- وجدنا المسلمين أعز نصراًWe found the Muslims mightiest in victory,
- وسائل نهاوندا بنا كيف وقعناThe ways of life have worn us down, how we have fallen
- ولقد شهدت البرق برق تهامةIndeed, I beheld the lightning—the lightning of Tihama.
- ولم أر قوماً مثل قوم رأيتهمAnd I have never seen a people like those I saw,
- ونحن حبسنا في نهاوند خيلناAnd we held back our horses at Nahavand
- ونحن قتلنا في جلولا أثابراًAnd we killed Athabir at Jalula,
- ويوم نهاوند شهدت فلم أخمAnd I was present on the day of Nahawand and did not flinch.
- يدعون قعقاعاً لكل كريهةThey call upon Qaʿqāʿ for every ordeal;
