أَحَبُّdearer إِلَيَّto me مِنthan دَعَةِthe ease of البَراحِopen country
Indeed, a war raging at the sand-bend of Qudays
is dearer to me than ease in open country.
وَضَربُand striking كَتيبَةٍa battalion وَطَعانُand spearing أُخرىanother
أَلَذُّmore delightful إِلَيَّto me مِنthan لَبَنِthe milk of اللِقاحِmilch camels
And striking one battalion and spearing another
is sweeter to me than the milk of milch camels.

أَقَمتُI stood firm عَلىupon خَواليهِits empty expanses البِطاحِthe level plains
And a day when minds are bewildered—
I held my ground upon its empty, level plains.

I routed its hosts while the horses swerved,
the wounds spewing blood or clots.
